Child rape victim urges others to speak up
A brave young woman who gave evidence in court against a serial rapist has encouraged other rape victims to come forward.
The victim, who was abused between the ages of 14 and 18, says reporting the offences to the police was one of the hardest things she has ever had to do but says she has no regrets.
Her attacker Alan Thompson, 42, was jailed indefinitely after being convicted of raping and indecent assaulting the teenage girl in Corby between 2004 and 2007.
Thompson was branded a dangerous offender and will spend a minimum of eight years in prison before being considered for parole.
Thompson, of Trinity Way, Littlehampton, Sussex, will be on the sex offenders’ register for the rest of his life after Northampton Crown Court heard he posed a significant risk of re-offending.
Recorder William Harbage QC said: “In the trial, you obviously denied the allegations and you tried to blame her for making advances towards you. The jury clearly rejected that account.
“I note you still deny committing these offences and it is clear to me you show no remorse at all and have no feelings of shame or compassion.
“Your behaviour was absolutely appalling and despicable to right minded thinking people.”
Speaking after the sentencing, the survivor said: “Although this was the scariest thing I have ever had to do, I would strongly recommend that anyone who has or is going through what I went through to talk to someone or tell the police. I feel I can now finally begin to move on with my life now that justice has been done.”
