Man, 58, jailed for looking at indecent pictures of children
A former Sunningdale college employee who looked at 559 indecent pictures of children on his personal computer has been jailed.
Pervert Stephen Shaljean-Tilley, of Furzebank, Sunninghill, was sentenced to 28 weeks in prison at Reading Crown Court, sitting at Reading Magistrates’ Court, yesterday.
The court heard how the married 58-year-old had held a ‘responsible position’ at the National School of Government that closed this year.
Shaljean-Tilley said he had spent two years looking at the images on his computer, which he said he looked at as his sex life had broken down and he was depressed.
The court heard how the photographs were of children from three years old to their mid-teens and the majority of them were pre-puberty pictures.
After his offences were revealed, Shaljean-Tilley was also kicked out of his bowls club by club officials.
He was charged on July 24 last year and pleaded guilty to five counts of making indecent photographs of children at Slough Magistrates’ Court on August 13.
They included making one image at level five category, 81 at level four, 50 at level three, eight at level two, and 419 at level one, all in Ascot on May 24 last year.
Level five photographs are the most indecent.
Shaljean-Tilley has also been placed on the sex offenders register for five years, banned from working with children and given a five-year sexual prevention order.
In sentencing, Judge Recorder Prior gave him credit for his early guilty plea, but said a custodial sentence was ‘inevitable’ as the offences were high in seriousness.
The court also heard how his neighbours had put a sign up on the front door of his Sunninghill home after hearing of his offences.
Judge Prior said this showed there was a ‘very major public concern’ among people in the country to protect young children.

![Alexander Barnes-Hines jailed]()
A man who used Facebook and text messages to lure two 14-year-old girls into sexual relationships has been jailed for more than three years.
Alexander Barnes-Hines admitted three counts of sexual activity with a child and one of sexual grooming.
The 23-year-old from Reading was jailed at the town’s crown court.
He will serve concurrent sentences of three years and four months for sexual activity with a child and 12 months for sexual grooming.
Thames Valley Police praised the victims for giving evidence.

Barnes-Hines, from Waverley Road, will also be subject to a sexual offences prevention order until further notice.
Its terms include no unsupervised contact with girls aged under 16 and prohibit him from owning any device capable of accessing the internet without the capability to retain and display a history of internet use.

Burnley sports coach jailed for eight years for sex offences
![glynthompson]()
A school sports coach from Lancashire has been jailed for eight years for child sex offences.
Glyn Thompson, 32, had admitted nine charges relating to a girl aged between 13 and 15, from January 2012 to April.
Thompson, of Padiham Road, Burnley, was jailed by a judge at Preston Crown Court.
Det Con Liz Owens said the coach at Stoneyholme Community Primary School in Burnley “groomed” his victim and put her through a “horrendous ordeal”.
He was also subjected to a sexual offences prevention order and ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register.
Police said Thompson was arrested on 4 July.
He pleaded guilty to all charges, which included four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child aged between 13-15 and one of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity under the Sexual Offences Act 2003.
After the hearing, Det Con Liz Owens of Lancashire Police said: “I am pleased with today’s sentence handed down to Thompson given the horrendous ordeal he put his young victim through.
“He took advantage of a young girl and groomed her over a long period of time.
“We will continue to work with other agencies to support her and hope that today’s sentence will bring her some closure.”

Married Turnford man fined £1,500 for indecently assaulting schoolgirl
A 51 year old man who indecently assaulted a 14 year old school girl has been fined £1,500 and told his name will go on the Sex Offenders Register.
In addition, Gary Saunders, 51, of Cassandra Gate, Turnford, was told he was barred from working with children.
During his trial at St Albans Crown Court, the jury heard his victim waited years before telling her mother she had been indecently assaulted by Saunders in his car.
Twelve years after being driven to woods by him, the victim – who had married and had her own family – finally told her mum Saunders had kissed and groped her.
Giving her evidence she said when her ordeal ended and she was getting out of his car, Saunders told her: “You best not tell anyone about this. It will be our secret.”
The woman, who is now 33, said she was 14 years old when Saunders assaulted her.
Saunders, a married man, pleaded not guilty to two offences of indecently assaulting the woman almost 19 years ago on October 7 1994.
Laura Blackband, prosecuting, said that a party was held which was attended by Saunders and his wife.
The victim told the jury she remembered the night because she came across Saunders sitting on the stairs and he appeared to be crying.
She said when she asked him what was wrong, he said there was no one he could talk to and then asked if he could talk to her.
“I said of course you can and he said ‘Not here, will you meet me tomorrow?,” she said.
The woman recalled coming home from school the next day and changing out of her uniform, before going to meet Saunders in Broxbourne.
She told the jury she still had no idea what he wanted to talk to her about, but got in Saunders’ car and then he drove to nearby Wormley Woods.
“I knew I was in trouble the moment he turned into the woods,” she told the court.
She said they stopped in a lay-by and he turned the car engine off.
“He started telling me I was very pretty and he would like to kiss me,” she said.
“I was quite frightened.”
She continued: “He kissed me in a full kiss kind of way – a snog with tongues.
“I did feel I had to kiss him back and play along.
“Then he started touching my boobs over my jumper.
“He may have grabbed both my breasts.”.
The woman said Saunders told her he wanted to remove her knickers.
At that point she told him she wanted things to stop.
“He sat back in a bit of a huff and was obviously quite disappointed I had wasted his time,” the victim added.
Moments later when she got out of the car she said the defendant told her: “You best not tell anyone about this. It will be our secret.”
The woman said she got married and in early 2006 told her mother for the first time what had happened.
She said her mother eventually contacted the police in 2011.
The defendant told the jury that nothing untoward had happened in the car with the girl, but he was found guilty and was fined £750 on each of the offences.

Predatory paedophile locked up indefinitely
A PENSIONER with a history of sex crimes against children has been sentenced to an indefinite jail term for abusing an eight-year-old girl.
Kenneth Kearsley, 68, of Brookfield Court, Crewe was already on the Sex Offenders’ Register when he preyed on the girl last year.
He had been jailed for four years in 2000 for four counts of indecently assaulting a child, and had two other child abuse convictions from the 1970s.
At Chester Crown Court on Friday, the court heard how Kearsley took advantage of the child, sexually assaulting her twice, engaging in sexual activity in front of her three times, and showing her explicit images.
Prosecuting, Peter Hussey QC told the court that when confronted about what he had done, Kearsley, who on January 9 pleaded guilty to the seven charges, begged for forgiveness.
“He expressed remorse and a hope that the matter would not be reported to the police because he would go to jail straight away. He was arrested soon after.”
Mr Hussey added since his release from his last prison term, Kearsley had undergone an operation to suppress his urges, but had still been capable of abusing the girl.
Defending, Gareth Robinson added: “He expressed remorse and shame for what he did, and hopes that young girl will be able to put the experience behind her and come through unscathed. Of course, he has lost everything.”
Judge David Hale told Kearsley: “She was a happy, innocent child and you could not resist abusing her, which you did repeatedly.”
He added: “The only appropriate sentence given that you have committed serious offences in the past is an indeterminate sentence for pubic protection. Others will decide when you are fit to be released, if ever.”
Kearsley must serve a minimum four years before parole.

Jail for child-cruelty bully
![nf]()
A MAN who smashed a young boy’s head into a dinner plate and shot another with an air rifle has been jailed for 12 months.
Gareth Meanock (36), who is an avid National Front supporter, subjected the two lads to almost seven years of cruelty.
The far right-wing backer was described as a bully in court and Judge Bernard Lever called him an unremorseful man for his violent actions.
One of the boys, now 16 years of age and who cannot be named for legal reason, is damaged according to his father.
He told the Chronicle after sentencing at Manchester Minshull Street Court on Friday: “Meanock’s arrogance was there until the end and he showed no remorse whatsoever.
“My son is still badly affected by what happened, but he is trying to get his life back on track.
“I honestly did not think he was going to go to prison at one stage. It’s just a relief he has.”
Meanock, who now lives in Blackpool, was convicted by a trial jury of two counts of child cruelty in July, who unanimously found him guilty.
The court also heard how one of the boys was shot at by Meanock with an air rifle once and after missing, he shot him again.
Meanock, who regularly moved house with his wife, lived at a range of addresses in the Oldham area, including Longfellow Crescent, London Road, Lees Road and Kipling Road.
It is believed Meanock, who can be seen on social networking site, Facebook, holding a poster to “vote NF”, was first verbally abusive before his behaviour escalated into violence.
Meanock, who does not work due to knee problems, denied any wrongdoing. Eventually one of the children bravely spoke out and the police became involved.
Judge Lever said: “You have not admitted any of it and you have showed no remorse to this regime of cruelty.”

Tugwood father and son from East Finchley and High Barnet jailed for ‘appalling’ sexual abuse of young girl
A father and son have both been jailed for the “appalling” sexual abuse of a young girl.
Wilson Tugwood, 66, of Helen Close, East Finchley, was today sentenced to 21 months in prison for assaulting the teenage victim in a public park between September 1980 and October 1983.
His son, John Tugwood, 46, of Mayhill Road, High Barnet, was jailed for 15 years in June for the systematic abuse of the same young girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons.
The pair were put on trial together at Wood Green Crown Court in April but a jury failed to reach a verdict in the case of the father.
Wilson Tugwood was found guilty following a re-trial last month and was sentenced today at the Lordship Lane court.
Prosecutors were restricted to seeking a maximum sentence of two years imprisonment – the longest available to a court at the time of the offence.
Sentencing this afternoon, Judge Simon Carr told the convicted paedophile he would be facing a sentence of six to eight years in prison had the offences been committed more recently.
The court heard how Wilson Tugwood’s offence took place in a public park soon after he had separated from his wife.
Speaking about the abuse of the victim, who was known to Tugwood, Judge Carr said: “You took the opportunity to breach her trust in the most appalling way and abuse her.
“You took her to a quite area of the park and, under the false pretence of a medical examination, digitally penetrated her.
“The effect on her has been devastating and she has felt shame for most of her life. She was being systematically abused at the same time by others, including your son.
“She was at her most vulnerable at the time of the assault and if she ever needed support it was then. Instead, she got the exact opposite. It is impossible to imagine a greater breach of trust.”
Tugwood was sentenced to a total of 21 months in prison and was told he would serve at least 14 months before being considered for parole. He will also be placed on the sex offenders’ register.
The crimes were first reported to police by the victim in April 2011.
The officer in charge of the case, DC John Ritsema, from the Metropolitan Police’s child abuse investigation team, said it had been a long road to achieve prosecutions in the case.
He said: “It is nice to bring a bit of closure to the whole thing. This was a huge breach of trust for someone at such an age and it was only years later the victim felt they could speak about it.
“He (Tugwood) strikes me as a very manipulative sort of person – he is an appalling individual. It is very frustrating that the sentence is restricted to two years but there is nothing we can do.
“I’m pleased he received a custodial sentence and I’m pleased for the victim. I hope this will bring some closure to her but it will never erase what happened.”

Police describe Eldred Makabali as ‘ a truly wicked man’
A predatory paedophile from Ealing has today (Friday 6 September) been jailed for life, to serve a minimum of 11 years, at Isleworth Crown Court for historical sexual offences against young girls.
Eldred Makabali, 62 was convicted on 8 March 2013 of 25 counts of sexual offences including the rape of girls as young as four years of age. The offences took place at residential address in Hounslow and Ealing between 1982 and 2005.
Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service Child Abuse Investigation Command began an investigation into Makabali in January 2012 following allegations made to them by four of his victims. Following further investigation six more victims came forward. Makabali was arrested in March 2012 and later charged.
The court heard how Makabali would trick his victims, who were all between the ages of four and fourteen years old at the time of the offences, by pretending to hypnotise them or on the pretext of giving them a massage.
Makabali refused to plead guilty and forced his victims to relive their ordeal during the court proceedings.
Detective Sergeant Tim Bramley of the MPS Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command said: “Makabali is a truly wicked man. He is a serial sex attacker who carried out his assaults on young girls over decades.
“We have suspicions that he continued to abuse up until the time he was arrested and I would urge any victims to come forward.
“I would like to pay tribute to the courage of victims who reported him to police in order to stop him and prevent other victims suffering abuse at his hands. I hope the knowledge that he now faces a considerable time behind bars and has been removed from being in a position to continue to abuse will bring them some comfort.”

Jailed: Taxi driver who raped 15-year-old boy
![ShahbazAhmed]()
A TAXI driver who raped a teenage boy in his car has been jailed for 10 years.
Married Metro Cars driver Shahbaz Ahmed enticed the 15-year-old boy into his vehicle by telling him it was not safe to walk home at night and offering him a lift.
But instead the father-of-three took the teenager to an isolated car park at Harwood Golf Club and forced him to perform a sex act.
Ahmed, aged 35, of Bertrand Road, Heaton, had denied rape but a jury unanimously found him guilty following a three-day trial in July.
At Bolton Crown Court this afternoon Vanessa Thomson, prosecuting, said the boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, now feels vulnerable on public transport, believes his personality has become more aggressive and was affected by having to give evidence at the trial.
“He felt like he was being called a liar,” she said.
The jury had heard how the boy had been walking along Thicketford Road, Tonge Moor, in the early hours of July 13 last year when Ahmed, who was working a shift for the taxi firm at the time, pulled up alongside him and offered him a lift.
The teenager thought he was being kind until he was taken to the car park instead of his home.
“He was alone and in the circumstances you took advantage of the situation and the fact you were in a taxi and you enticed him into your car,” Judge Stead told Ahmed.
“I have no doubt at all that your purpose was sexual.”
He added that Ahmed used his dominant position to force the boy to comply with the abuse.
“When in the car park the complainant stated in his evidence, and I accept it is the truth, that your manner changed. You were less pleasant and you intimidated him,” said Judge Stead.
“He was frightened over what might happen next. He felt so isolated and intimidated that, upon your requirement that he perform a sexual acts with you, his will was overborne and he was unable to do other than allow the events to happen against his will.”
Wayne Jackson, defending, said Ahmed, who has no previous convictions, had generally been well regarded and thought of as being polite with a pleasant demeanour.
He added that the taxi driver’s wife is expecting their third child in January and the conviction has had a devastating effect on his family.
“There is no doubt that Ahmed is a man who has substantially fallen from grace,” said Mr Jackson.
Judge Stead also made a sexual offences prevention order banning Ahmed from living and sleeping in the same accommodation as a boy under the age of 16 without official approval.
He is also prohibited from contacting his victim and must provide police with the details of any vehicle he drives.
He has now been placed on the sex offenders register and is banned from working with children and vulnerable adults .
Det Con Mark Tiffany, from the police’s serious sexual offences unit, said: “The trauma of what happened will stay with the victim for a long time and it is a credit to him that he gave evidence that was vital in securing Ahmed’s conviction.”
July 2013
A TAXI driver faces jail after being convicted of picking up a teenage boy and raping him in his car.
It took a jury of eight men and four women just three and a half hours to unanimously find Shahbaz Ahmed guilty of raping the 15-year-old boy.
During a three day trial at Bolton Crown Court they had heard how the boy, who is now aged 16, was walking home along Thicketford Road,Tonge Moor in the early hours of July 13 last year after spending the evening with friends.
Metro Cars driver Ahmed was working that night when he spotted the teenager, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, and offered him a lift, telling the boy, “You shouldn’t be walking around at this time. It’s dangerous.”
The teenager told the court he thought the driver was just being kind, but after stopping briefly outside the boy’s home, Ahmed then drove to the car park at Harwood Golf Club.
There he forced the boy to perform a sex act on him. The teenager said he was too terrified to run away because he feared Ahmed would run him over with the car.
After the ordeal Ahmed, a 35-year-old married father-of-three, drove the boy home and the teenager told adults what had happened.
DNA from Ahmed was found on the boy and the taxi driver, of Parkfield Road, Great Lever, was arrested.
He admitted a sexual act had taken place, butclaimed it was at the teenager’s instigation, adding that the boy had pulled out a knife and threatened to hurt himself if he did not take part.
Ahmed stood emotionless in the dock as the guilty verdict was read out and his defence counsel Wayne Jackson, requesting an adjournment until September 6 for reports to be prepared before sentence is passed, conceded: “A custodial sentence of some length will follow.”
Judge Timothy Stead told Ahmed: “The matter you have been found guilty of is a serious one. In all the circumstances you will be remanded in custody between now and September.”
Ahmed was also told he will be placed on the sex offenders register and is now barred from working with children and vulnerable adults.

Highfield man is jailed for 12 year for ‘systematic’ abuse of young girl
A man who sexually abused a young girl six years ago has been given a lengthy jail sentence.
Paul McLatchey, 63, who was jailed for 12 years at St Albans Crown Court, carried out assaults on his victim when she was aged 10 or 11 but he still denies committing the crimes.
Prosecutor Alisdair Smith told the court the abuse happened two or three times a week for two or three months some time between July 2006 and September 2007.
McLatchey of Thumpers in Highfield, Hemel Hempstead, was convicted of sexual activity with a child aged under 13, engaging in sexual activity with a child aged under 13 and two counts of sexual penetration.
Sentence had been adjourned for a probation report on McLatchey, who had suffered a heart attack in 1994.
Judge Stephen Warner told him: “It was systematic abuse over two or three months” and said that he had shown ‘a lack of insight’.
McLatchey will remain on the Sex Offender Register for life.

Former choirmaster jailed for indecent assault
![lillis]()
A former teacher and choirmaster has been jailed for six years for indecently assaulting two boys under the age of 16 in Surrey.
John Lillis, of Arthur Road, Windsor, Berkshire, was convicted at Guildford Crown Court of one count of attempted rape and two of indecent assault.
The 63-year-old had previously admitted five counts of indecent assault.
The offences happened between 1976 and 1982 at a house near St Dunstan’s Catholic Church in Woking.
Lillis was ordered to sign the sex offenders register at the hearing.
Det Con Paul Carpenter, of Surrey Police, said: “I hope today’s result will give closure and go some way in helping his victims move on with their lives and begin to have hope for their futures.
“They are to be commended for their courage and fortitude in coming forward and pursuing this prosecution after many years.”

Former teacher and choirmaster convicted of indecently assaulting young boys
A former teacher and choirmaster has been found guilty of attempted buggery and two counts of indecent assault against two boys.
John Lillis was convicted by the jury at Guildford Crown Court on Tuesday (August 13). He had already pleaded guilty to four other counts of indecent assault between 1973 and 1982 at an earlier hearing.
Lillis, a teacher at St Dunstan’s Catholic Primary School in Woking at the time of the offences, was allowed to continue in his job at a Woking church 20 years after first admitting indecently assaulting the boys, the court heard.
The 63-year-old, now of Arthur Road, Windsor, was first confronted in 1989 about the offences.
Lillis was also choirmaster and organist for the twinned St Dunstan’s Catholic Church in Shaftesbury Road and at the famous St George’s College, in Weybridge, the court was told.
Lillis admitted to church bosses he had groomed and touched the two boys and assured them it would not happen again, the court heard.
He created a “veil of secrecy” and plied the victims with cigarettes, alcohol and sweets, the court heard.
The Department of Education placed him on a banned list and he was forced to resign as a teacher and choirmaster in 1989.
A letter of explanation written at the time by Lillis, which was never sent, played down what had happened.
“I am ashamed to say I was underplaying what happened,” revealed Lillis, when he gave evidence on Thursday (August 8). “I could not bring myself to write down the extent of what I had done.”
Despite resigning from his positions, Lillis continued to live in his church-subsidised property in Woking and returned to his post as choirmaster a year later.
He said: “The then parish priest invited me to resume as choirmaster which I did.”
He was rewarded with the rented house for the “good work he was doing in the church”, the court heard.
In 2003, someone came forward expressing concerns that Lillis was still involved with children through his “high-profile” position at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church and St George’s College, the court was told.
Two years passed before the church entered into a ‘contract’ with Lillis to stop him having contact with children. The victims were not part of the choir but children were no longer allowed to sing in the St Dunstan’s Catholic Church choir as a result.
Prosecutor Jennifer Gray said: “They saw that really as the church saying it was okay.”
In 2011, Lillis met with senior church officials and was instructed to leave his church house, resign as choirmaster and organist at St Dunstan’s Church and close down the choral society he ran because the person who had complained had become “angry” with how the situation had been handled.
A new safeguarding officer at the church ruled it was “not appropriate” for him to be involved.
Lillis was arrested in June 2012.
Miss Gray said: “It is a sad tale.
“As time went on he starting behaving more inappropriately with them [the boys]. Then he started touching them.
“He does not like to admit to exactly what he has done.”
A victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said he was singled out by Lillis as his “special friend”.
He added: “I think now how on earth did I let it happen. I felt trapped, he become obsessed with me.”
When quizzed about the charge of attempted buggery on Thursday (August 8), Lillis admitted to a sexually motivated act but denied ever trying to take it further and said he was “deeply ashamed”.
He said: “I did something I have never done before.
“It was a moment of madness, I realised it was a ridiculous situation for anybody to find themselves in.
“I cannot give a logical explanation to this.”
Lillis is on conditional bail and will be sentenced at the same court on September 6.

FURY AS SISTERS’ RAPIST IS JAILED FOR 7 YEARS
TWO sisters who were repeatedly raped by their brother-in-law said yesterday: “Let him rot in hell.”
Child molester James Sloan, 39, was handed a seven-year jail term for 35 counts of rape and indecent assault spanning more than 10 years.
But his victims, who waived their right to anonymity, were furious at the sentence.
Following angry scenes at Belfast Crown Court, in the Laganside Courts complex, one victim said: “He took 10 years of my life and he is given just seven.”
Her sister added they “would try to get on with their lives”.
As Sloan was led away, court staff, police and a solicitor had to separate his victims from his wife, their half-sister, who had told the court that she had forgiven her husband and was standing by him.
Sloan, from Oakview, Templepatrick, Co Antrim, began to rape and abuse one victim when she was only 12. A few years later he started to prey on the other victim when she was just 11.
Judge Patrick Markey said Sloan’s “catalogue of rape and indecency must be severely punished”.
He described his actions as “extremely unpleasant and disgraceful” and ordered he be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
The court also heard that since Sloan pleaded guilty to the charges, which date back to 1991, his family had received hate mail and their car had been vandalised.
Posters labelling him a “child molester” had also been put up near his home. Judge Markey said he sympathised with the hurt that caused Sloan’s family but added that “no one but yourself has inflicted that upon them”.

Rapist jailed for 23 years over schoolgirl attacks
![fairly]()
A RAPIST has been jailed for 23 years for sex attacks on two young victims.
Kenneth Fairley, who continues to deny his guilt, ensured the schoolgirls kept silent by using threats and force.
The attacker told the girls nobody would believe them if they broke their silence about their ordeals.
At Newcastle Crown Court yesterday, Judge Penny Moreland told the 47-year-old: “You robbed them of their childhood.
“You have caused them dreadful pain.
“You continue to deny the offences, you have shown no remorse whatsoever for what you did.”
Fairley, of Toft Crescent, Murton, was found guilty by a jury of 14 rape charges as well as five of indecent assault, one of indecency with a child and one of attempted rape. He was also convicted of an intimidation charge after warning one of his victims “you’re dead” after she reported what he had done to her to the police.
Fairley told the court “I’m killing myself, I’ve done nothing wrong,” after he was found guilty of the 22 charges after a trial by a jury last month.
The court heard during the trial how one victim was repeatedly raped and abused by Fairley.
Judge Moreland said: “You raped her.
“Unmoved by her pain and tears, you kept her silence by threats, by bullying and by force.
“You broke her spirit so she submitted to you.”
The second victim was also repeatedly abused and Fairley attempted to rape her.
The judge said: “Once again, you were unmoved by the upset you were causing her.”
Fairley must abide by the terms of a sexual offences prevention order and sign the sex offenders register for life.
Julie Clemitson, defending, said Fairley is not in good health.
Speaking after the case, Diane Hanlon, 43, Fairley’s sister-in-law, said he planned to appeal the sentence.
She added: “We maintain he is innocent and will be starting a petition.”

Retired Fife businessman admits possessing indecent images
A retired Fife businessman, who was caught with more than 5,000 indecent images featuring children and animals, had his sentence deferred at Cupar Sheriff Court
Walter Mac Lawrie, 66, of Atholl Terrace, Kirkcaldy, admitted that between January 1 2008 and March 21 2012 at his home address he was in possession of indecent or pseudo photographs of children as well as extreme pornographic images depicting sexual activity between a person and animals.
The court heard the images were recovered on hard drives and other storage devices by police. In total, there were 4,416 still images and 1,159 videos, of which 555 were level four of the Copine Scale and 25 were level five — 24 of these images were described as “extreme pornography”.
Lawrie has been married for 42 years and ran his own business, Kirkcaldy Aerial Services, before retiring six years ago due to ill-health.
He claimed his viewing habits had started off as a “game” and he did not expect to become “sucked in” to the extent that he had been and he did not get any sexual gratification from viewing the images.

Child abuse images offender allowed to walk free by same judge who handed education official suspended sentence
![karl-jones]()
A JUDGE who gave a suspended sentence to an education official convicted of downloading indecent images of children has allowed another child porn offender to walk free.
Judge Samuel Wiggs was criticised recently for giving a suspended sentence to former council officer Robert Ian Finlay, who downloaded 600 child abuse images.
On Friday, he gave a three-year supervision order to another man who downloaded more than 500 indecent images of children.
Karl Jones, 35, pleaded guilty to 20 counts of possessing still and moving images of categories 1-4, which were found on his hard drives on July 7 last year by the owners of the property in which he was staying.
Judge Wiggs said a custodial sentence would not be in the interests of justice and imposed the three-year order along with a requirement that he attend a sexual offenders treatment programme for up to 60 days.
Prosecuting, Stuart Ellacott told Bournemouth Crown Court that Jones, of Capstone Place, Bournemouth, had initially admitted downloading large amounts of adult ‘teen’ porn, which might have contained the indecent images.
However, he later pleaded guilty to the charges.
Mr Ellacott said police found software on his computer designed to make it difficult for the IP address to be traced by the authorities, and which would also allow him to circumvent blocks imposed by internet browsers.
In mitigation, Nicholas Robinson said Jones was living in Bristol as a full-time carer for his 84-year-old mother, who has suspected lung cancer.
He said: “Mr Jones clearly deserves to be punished – there are no excuses for this behaviour.
“He is deemed to be of low risk of re-offending due to his previous good character, but a short prison sentence is too little to impact on his behaviour and minimised sense of responsibility. It might be appropriate to have a meaningful sentence in the community.”
Judge Wiggs said: “You don’t need me to tell you the public are very concerned about cases of this nature.
“In many cases it is necessary to impose a prison sentence. However they are relatively short at this level and the public interest would be better served by your having treatment and being supervised for a longer period.”
Jones was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for seven years, and to submit any internet device to police on request for examination.

Leicester child prostitution trial: Six men jailed
![Bharat MODHWADIA]()
Six men have been jailed for paying or offering to pay a “vulnerable and damaged” 16-year-old girl for sex.
Leicester Crown Court heard she had been used as a “sexual commodity” and left with internal injuries.
The girl told the men she was a prostitute, but the judge said they must have realised she was vulnerable and should have helped her.
The men, whose ages range from 20 to 39, were jailed for between eight months and five years.
Three pleaded guilty at their first appearance at Leicester Crown Court and three pleaded guilty part-way through a trial.
Judge Michael Pert QC said: “While it is fair to say that none of the defendants played any part in her decision to prostitute herself, it is equally true to say that anyone meeting her would immediately have realised that this was a vulnerable 16-year-old girl from a good Sikh family, who was embarking upon a disastrous course of action.”
‘Spreading the word’
The girl, now 17, had been been drinking alcohol to excess, smoking cannabis and self-harming, and said she needed to make money as her parents had threatened to throw her out.
She told police that boys at college had paid her for sex before she met the men, who were all from Leicester.
Rakib Iacub was the first of the men to have sex with the victim, after they met at a Diwali festival.
The 20 year old introduced his 39-year-old friend, Aabidali Mubarak Ali, to the girl, and the three had sex together in a bed and breakfast.
Judge Pert said Ali was responsible for “spreading the word” about the girl, who began receiving a large number of phone calls from men, and also Facebook messages.
Between November last year and January this year the men had sex with her at various locations across Leicester, including a flat above the Moghul Durbar restaurant in East Park Road.
A group of people later attacked the restaurant and assaulted several people including Wajid Usman, who had also had sex with the girl.
‘Extremely unhappy’
Some of the men claimed they did not know it was illegal to pay a girl under 18 for sex, but Judge Pert said their conduct was “morally reprehensible” regardless.
He said: “She was, and is, articulate and attractive, but for reasons wholly unconnected to these defendants she was very vulnerable.
“She had been brought up in a traditional, if not conservative Sikh family and was, according to her, extremely unhappy.
“Any man with an ounce of decency would have tried to help her, not treated her as a sexual commodity, which is what each of you did.”

Aabidali Mubarak Ali, 39, of Guthlaxton Street, was jailed for five years for two charges of paying for the sexual services of a child, and one charge of facilitating child prostitution. In mitigation, his barrister said he is an immigration “overstayer” and the consequences for his wife and three children will be “grave” if he is deported after serving his prison sentence.

Rakib Iacub, 20, of Maynard Road, was jailed for three years for two charges of paying for the sexual services of a child, and one charge of facilitating child prostitution. His barrister said he was a virgin before having sex with the victim, and said he came from a “respectable family” which moved to England from India in 2003. He feels “deeply ashamed”.

Wajid Usman, of East Park Road, was jailed for two years for paying for the sexual services of a child. He is an illegal immigrant from Afghanistan and claims not to know his date of birth, but is thought to be 22. His barrister said he had “fled a dreadful regime” and did not know paying the girl for sex was unlawful.

Hamza Imtiazali, 28, of Kashmir Road, was jailed for two years for one charge of paying for the sexual services of a child, and two of facilitating child prostitution. His barrister said he feels “deeply remorseful”.

Bharat Modhwadia, 25, of Wycombe Road, was jailed for 16 months for paying for the sexual services of a child, inciting child pornography, and trafficking the girl by driving her to a location for sex. Judge Pert acknowledged that he had initially advised the girl not to have sex for money, but this did not ultimately stop him from “taking advantage of her”.

-
Chandresh Mistry, 37, of Berridge Lane, was jailed for eight months for attempting to pay for the sexual services of a child. He used Facebook to arrange to have sex with the girl, but they did not have sex because he became aware of the police investigation.

Teacher guilty of sexual grooming
A teacher has been placed in custody after being convicted of grooming a 13-year-old schoolboy
Peter McGinnis, 48, met the child at the school he taught at and befriended the boy and his family.
He took them on trips in the school holidays and took the boy on overnight stays to a hotel and a log cabin.
McGinnis denied the allegation and claimed he was a “friend of the family”.
After a trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court, McGinnis, from Glasgow, was found guilty of sexually grooming the boy between June 2009 and March 2010.
Sheriff John McCormick told McGinnis that because of the “insidious” nature of the charge and as he was a teacher who “inveigled” himself in to the family a custodial sentence was almost inevitable.
The court heard McGinnis first met the teenager when he taught him English.
Near the end of the school term in 2009, McGinnis offered to give the pupil extra help on work.
Soon he was helping the boy with school work, bringing the boy to his South Lanarkshire home where he spent time alone with him and was also getting close to his family.
The teenager claimed he would go to McGinnis’ home where they would drink alcohol and he went away overnight with him on two occasions and that they shared a room.
McGinnis told the jury: “I was a friend of the family I wasn’t there in the position as a teacher.”
Procurator fiscal depute Cassie Scott asked: “Do you find it appropriate to take one of your pupils away for the night to a log cabin?”
He said: “In the circumstances at the time I found it appropriate.”
The former teacher denied taking alcohol for the boy to drink during the overnight stay at the cabin, but the jury was shown a photograph of the teenager holding a bottle of beer.
He confirmed he also took the teenager to a hotel for the night and shared a room with him on that occasion.
The court heard that in March 2010 the boy told a family member what had been going on.
Sentence was deferred until next month and McGinnis was remanded in custody.
He was also placed on the Sex Offenders register.
