A Facebook predator has been jailed for grooming a vulnerable 14-year-old girl and persuading her to have sex with him on their first date.
Jake Cornish, aged 19, was caught after the victim’s mother found his sexually explicit messages on her daughter’s Facebook page and the schoolgirl told her what had happened.
Cornish arranged to meet the girl after contacting her on the internet and took her back to his home in Exeter after going air gun shooting in nearby woodland.
When he was caught he told detectives that he had read on the internet that the age of consent was 14.
He was jailed after a judge at Exeter Crown Court declared that the courts have a duty to protect vulnerably youngsters from men who sought to exploit them.
Cornish, of King Stephen’s Close, Exeter, admitted sexual activity with a child and was jailed for two years in a Young Offenders’ Institution by Judge Phillip Wassall.
The judge told him:”As soon as you contacted this girl your interest was sexual and you asked her for sexual pictures. There was an extensive exchange of Facebook messages which only serves to demonstrate how vulnerable 14-year-old girls are.
“That is why the courts have a duty to protect them from older people who talk to them with the plain aim of engaging with them in sexual activity.
“Girls of 14 are prone to putting themselves at risk of being drawn into situations where they are way out of their depth, and that is what happened in this case. That is why they must be protected.
“When this girl went back to your home and you asked her to have sex she says you had a scary look in your eyes.
“Whether that is right or wrong, she was not experienced enough to know and she felt there was no way out other than to say yes. This offence is very much about power.”
Mr Gordon Richings, prosecuting, said Cornish made contact with the victim by Facebook and sent her a sexual messages which asked her to send pictures of herself.
At the time his long term relationship had ended and he arranged to meet the girl, who he took shooting in woodland before having sex with her at his home.
The girl was upset by the incident and the offence was reported after her mother discovered the Facebook traffic and asked the website to block any further messages from Cornish.
Mr Adrian Chaplin, defending, said the sex had been consensual and the complaint had been made after Cornish returned to his former partner, who is the mother of his young child.
He said Cornish initially told police that he thought the age of consent was 14 but did not pursue this claim. He said at the time he was 18 and the age difference was not as great as in some cases.
