Football coach locked up for sexual relationship with underage girl he was training

STUARTSHARPLES

A football coach has been jailed after he had a sexual relationship with an underage girl he was coaching.

Stuart Sharples, 29, was locked up for 32 months and must sign the sex offenders register after the girl’s parents found out about the affair and reported him to police.

Sharples, of Middleton , struck up a friendship with the girl and the pair began to exchange text messages.

Sharples also offered to help the girl with her school work, something her parents objected to.

When they confronted him, Sharples claimed he was genuinely offering his help with no ulterior motive.

Yet the pair remained in contact and eventually embarked on a sexual relationship, with Sharples sending her love letters and showering her with gifts.

The girl’s parents discovered a number of the letters which suggested the relationship was sexual, and they called in police.

Sharples, of Jubilee Road, was arrested and admitted during interview he had been in a sexual relationship with the young girl, and that he knew she was under the age of consent.

He pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual activity with a child at an earlier hearing.

He was sentenced to 32 months in prison at Minshull Street Crown Court on Thursday and will have to sign the Sex Offender’s Register indefinitely.

Detective Constable April Hopwood said: “In the strictest sense, this was a consensual sexual relationship.

“But we need to be absolutely clear that, by law, anyone under the age of 16 cannot give their consent to sexual relations.

“He should have put a stop to any relationship before it escalated and because of his training, he was well aware of his duty to protect this girl but it would appear he instigated much of relationship, pursuing her and sending her love letters and gifts.

“I hope this case sends out a warning to anyone else who holds a position of such trust and is tempted to embark on a sexual relationship with someone who is not old enough to give their consent.”

Internet paedophile caught in police sting but walks free from court

A 54-year-old man who attempted to groom a 13-year-old girl over the internet has walked free from court.

Ralph Peebles-Brown spent four months engaging the girl in sexually explicit conversations and sending her images of child abuse. He also called her mobile phone to arrange a meeting in London.

But in reality, Peebles-Brown was talking to a covert internet investigator with the Metropolitan Police, who works as part of a unit dedicated to identifying those who prey on children over the internet.

At Taunton Crown Court he pleaded guilty one count of attempted grooming, one count of distribution of indecent images of children, seven counts of making indecent images of children and two counts of attempting to cause a child to watch a sex act.

Peebles-Brown, of Barnabas Close, Axbridge, was sentenced to 15-months imprisonment, suspended for two years. He also received a 10-year Sexual Offenders Prevention Order (SOPO) and will be placed on the sex offenders’ register.

Following his sentencing investigating officer Det Con Geoff Colvin, of Avon and Somerset Police’s Internet Child Abuse Team, said: “Peebles-Brown set out to contact an underage girl through a social media site.

“Once he made contact, he began grooming her and would encourage her to engage in conversations of an increasingly sexual nature, culminating in making an arrangement to meet her on 6 October 2012 in London.

“Peebles-Brown was running late so did not make their planned meeting, but he sent the girl an apology the next day before sending her more indecent material.

“A file was sent to us by the Metropolitan Police and Peebles-Brown was arrested on 17 October 2012.

“As part of the investigation, his computer equipment was seized and more than 200 indecent images and movies were found.

“We remain fully committed to unmasking online paedophiles and making the internet a safer place.

“This investigation is a prime example of how we are working successfully with our colleagues in the Metropolitan Police and sharing expertise and intelligence in order to bring offenders like Peebles-Brown to justice.”

Serial sex offender escapes jail term

A SERIAL sex offender caught with more than 2,000 child sex images has avoided an immediate jail sentence.

Some of the images on Jason John West’s computer involved girls as young as three, Reading Crown Court heard on Friday, January 24.

The 39-year-old, of Church Road in Pamber Heath, whose previous convictions include having sex with a child and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, walked free from the dock after Judge Zoe Smith suspended his prison sentence.

This was to enable him to attend a sex offenders’ treatment programme for a second time, she said.

Jonathan Sank, prosecuting, said police raided West’s home in August 2012 and seized his computer, which was later found to contain 2,315 images of children, aged mainly from three to 13 years of age.

Eleven of the images were classed as Level Five – the most serious and disturbing category – the court heard.

Mr Sank said that police analysis of the computer revealed that West had entered terms such as “six-year-old nude girls” into the search engine.

West admitted one charge of making indecent photographs of children.

Mr Sank outlined West’s previous convictions including two instances of sexual intercourse with a girl aged under 13, for which he received a two year super-vision order in 1999.

A year later he received a 12- month jail sentence for three charges of indecent assault on a female aged under 16.

Four years later, in 2004, he was sentenced to a three-year community rehabilitation order for a charge of inciting a female under 16 to engage in sexual activity.

Russell Pyne, for West, reminded the court of West’s early admission of guilt and said his client suffered from depression and financial woes.

He added: “He has a job – he has been employed since moving into the area some 13 or 14 years ago, and in his opinion, it is to society’s benefit for him to continue in that job, to earn some money and give him something to do in the day.”

Mr Pyne said West had found a previous sex offenders’ treatment programme helpful and suggested this was a more useful option than prison.

Judge Smith said: “My concern is that although he found the previous programme helpful, it failed to prevent him re-offending – what’s to say this one will?”

Probation officers told Judge Smith that West was suitable for an intensive, two-year sex offenders’ treatment programme.

And Mr Pyne pointed out that his client had not breached his bail conditions in the two years since his arrest and that he used a library computer to access his emails, rather than a home computer.

Judge Smith sentenced West to 10 months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, to allow him to attend the programme.

She also made West subject to a two-year supervision order and ordered him to pay £670 costs.

West’s computer hard drive was ordered to be destroyed.

Bristol man groomed 14 year old girl on Facebook is jailed

large

A MIDDLE-AGED man who groomed a 14-year-old girl for sex, but claimed he was pretending to be her boyfriend so she could impress her friends on Facebook, has been jailed for 15 months.

Darren Kenna-Jones had his Facebook account shut down when the social network site detected what it considered was inappropriate contact with the girl.

Initially the youngster told police the he had pretended to be her 16-year-old boyfriend, Bristol Crown Court heard.

In a second interview she told police she had lied, saying Kenna-Jones asked her to tell the story and she did so because she was scared.

Kenna-Jones, 42, of Daventry Road, Knowle, denied arranging to meet a child following sexual grooming.

He has also pleaded not guilty to having sexual activity with a child and doing an act tending or intended to pervert the course of justice.

A jury at Bristol Crown Court convicted him of grooming, cleared him of sexual activity and failed to reach a verdict on the alleged perversion of justice – which was recorded as not guilty by a judge.

Judge Richard Bromilow told him sexual language Kenna-Jones used in messages to the girl were described by her as “vile”.

He told Kenna-Jones: “They were disgusting in my view. You did abuse your position because she had become trusting of you.

“I’m quite satisfied that but for the intervention of Facebook and the police you would have met with her for sexual activity.

“Your behaviour had been wholly shameful.”

Kenna-Jones was ordered to sign as a sex offender for ten years and was made the subject of a ten year sexual offences prevention order banning him from unsupervised contact with youngsters.

Peter Coombe, opening the case for the prosecution, said: “The prosecution are saying that this defendant was seeking to indulge in sexual activity with an under-age girl and he had been grooming her for that purpose.”

Mr Coombe said an investigation was prompted when Facebook contacted police and alerted them to Kenna-Jones’ activities on the site in March 2012.

Mr Coombe said: “Facebook drew the police’s attention to a conversation between the defendant and (the girl) on March 14.

“It made it quite plain to meet on March 16, and it was quite plain that the defendant was saying that was for sexual purposes.”

Mr Coombe read the jury a graphic message sent by the defendant, to which the child replied: “Ok then, sexy. I’m just saying to my mum I’m going out with a friend.”

The court heard police visited the defendant’s home and spoke to his wife, who contacted her husband.

Mr Coombe said that, after that, the defendant and the girl communicated with each other by text before he was arrested.

The accused told police the girl asked him to pretend to be her boyfriend so she was not left out.

He said it was “just a laugh and got out of hand” and he never had sexual intentions towards her at all.

The jury heard police spoke to the girl and she confirmed it was a joke which she didn’t know who started.

She confirmed messages from him became explicit and she was shocked.

The court was read messages the pair exchanged which Mr Coombe described as “overtly sexual discussion”.

When his Facebook account was closed he continued to communicate with her with a flurry of texts, the court heard.

In a second interview the girl said she was lying and the man had told her what to say.

She also said they had met, the defendant had touched her bottom and she “whacked his arm” and he laughed.

The accused was re-interviewed and said the messages were just “banter”.

Speaking via video link, the girl told the jury: “He wants to act innocent and he wasn’t. He knows he’s in the wrong. I’m telling the truth, what have I got to lie for?”

Isle of Man teacher found guilty of rape

dav

A maths teacher from the Isle of Man has been found guilty of rape and 10 counts of indecent assault.

Davoud Taghinejad, 58, who committed the crimes between 2011 and 2013, is being held in custody to await sentencing on Tuesday.

The assaults involved five girls who were aged between 13 and 17 at the time.

A jury of seven – three women and four men – delivered its verdict at Douglas Court House.

Deemster Alastair Montgomerie said Taghinejad was facing a “substantial” prison sentence.

He added: “It has taken a great deal of courage for the victims in this case to come forward and give evidence.

“They are all young girls and they should be proud of the dignity with which they have conducted themselves during these proceedings. I hope now they can move on with their lives.”

During the two-week trial the jury heard evidence from the girls, some by a live video-link-up.

They told how Taghinejad introduced “games” into their maths lessons.

These games involved the children holding their breath while Taghinejad felt for their heartbeat – and indecently assaulted them.

One girl described how this “game” later progressed into rape.

Taghinejad taught at North Trafford College in Greater Manchester for 10 years before moving to the Isle of Man in 2009.

In another twist, his son was convicted for grooming a 12 yr old girl for sex in November 2012

Sex attacker brought to justice for rapes in 1970s

A MAN who raped and sexually assaulted two young girls in the 1970s, one for almost a decade, was jailed for 10 years today (Friday).

Derek Frost, of Southbourne Gardens, Ruislip, was found guilty of 18 charges: seven indecent assaults and seven rapes – including rape on a girl aged just 11 years-old – as well as three serious sexual assaults, and one of sexual intercourse with a girl under 13.

Frost, 58, denied the allegations, but a unanimous decision by the jury at Isleworth Crown Court found him guilty of all charges.

The court heard that he sexually abused his two victims between 1971 and 1980.

Several took place at addresses around Ruislip and Eastcote, including Ruislip Woods, and near to the River Pinn by Eastcote Cricket Club in High Road.

Frost was 15 when he started his offending. The first victim, now in her 50s, was just 11 when her abuse began, and it continued throughout her teenage years until she was 19.

The second victim was aged 14 and 15 when she was raped, including one occasion where she was attacked in her school uniform.

Giving evidence, the first victim told jurors that after the first attack, Frost told her if she spoke to anyone about the abuse, she would be dead.

“I thought, as long as I went along with it, as long as I didn’t tell anyone, I would be alive. I felt it was wrong, but I was too young to even know what it was.

“Before it started I thought you could only get pregnant if you were married, and I thought babies were born from your belly button. I knew nothing about sex.

“I haven’t told nobody about this for so long. I didn’t want anyone to know, but now I have told it, I want it all out in the open,” she said.

Judge Robin Johnson sentenced Frost to 10 years behind bars, and ordered his name to appear on the sex offenders register for life.

Wyke dad found guilty of child sex offences

A father-of-one has been remanded in custody by a judge after a jury found him guilty of sexual offences against a young girl.

Craig Baldwin, 40, had denied charges of inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, but yesterday the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts on both allegations.

The victim cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Judge Burn said he had been convicted of two serious offences and a prison sentence was inevitable.

The offences date back December 2012 and Judge Burn said he wanted a pre-sentence report on Baldwin, of Whycote End, Wyke, to assess whether he posed any future risk.

“I’m afraid you will be remanded in custody until sentence in this matter which will be on March 7,” the judge told Baldwin.

He will now have to register as a sex offender with the police and prosecutor Christine Egerton said the prosecution would also be applying for a sexual offences prevention order to made against Baldwin at the next hearing.

Missing 14-year-old girl was found with ‘sexual predator’ she met on Facebook

large

A 14-year-old girl who went missing from home for three days was found with a man she had met on Facebook.

The girl had sex with Daniel Alan Farmer (24) while spending a weekend with him, in May last year.

Farmer, of The Green, Coalville, pleaded guilty at Leicester Crown Court to two counts of sexual activity with a child under 16.

Judge Simon Hammond jailed him for four years.

“Her parents reported her missing and they must have been beside themselves with anxiety,” Judge Hammond said.

“The girl was in contact with the defendant on Facebook.

“They were in regular communication and arranged to meet. There was an element of grooming.”

Judge Hammond said of Farmer: “He’s a sexual predator and used her for sexual gratification.

“The courts have a duty to protect young and impressionable girls. It wasn’t her fault, it was his fault because he was the adult.”

Victoria Rose, prosecuting, said the girl went missing on Friday, May 17, and police began a search for her.

Officers found and stopped the pair on Sunday, May 19, in Newton Road, Heather.

Both had love bite marks on their necks.

The victim, who was described as vulnerable, with learning difficulties, told the police she had spent the weekend at the flat, where the defendant was then living. They had sex twice.

Farmer, who was 23 at the time, claimed the girl had falsely told him after they met that she would be 16 the following month.

Judge Hammond said: “The prosecution says he knew what year she was in at school and he must have known her age.”

The girl initially claimed she was coerced into sexual activity but later admitted she willingly took part.

The court heard Farmer had a previous conviction, in 2007, for two similar offences of sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl, when he was 17 or 18.

The girl told the police Farmer had made threats to her, but the claim was found to be untrue when investigated.

The girl was given a police caution.

Paul Tubb, mitigating, said Farmer was lonely and began communicating with other people via social media.

He initially thought the girl was 16 or 17.

Mr Tubb said: “He wasn’t deliberately targeting a young person, he wanted someone to talk to.

“He’s since moved back to his parents’ home. He’s received abuse from people online.”

Former school caretaker from Bingley is jailed for sex abuse

Snatch

A former school caretaker has been jailed for five years for sexually abusing two young children at his home more than a decade ago.

John Thorpe, 61, molested a girl in his garden shed after they had picked peas together and assaulted a boy with the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner, Bradford Crown Court heard.

Thorpe, of Park Hill Grove, Bingley, was convicted by a jury of six charges of indecency with a child, two of indecent assault and one of indecent assault on a male person.

He was caretaker at Woodhouse Grove School, Apperley Bridge, for six years but had now lost his job, his barrister Geraldine Kelly told the court yesterday.

She handed in “glowing” references for Thorpe, described by Judge Peter Benson as a man of positive good character.

The school spoke very highly of him and he had never done anything wrong while in his post there.

Prosecutor Kirsty Watson said Thorpe’s female victim was left traumatised. She did not complain at the time because she was frightened no one would believe her.

The boy had thought what Thorpe did was amusing but in later years he realised he had been abused.

The first victim said Thorpe sexually abused her in his potting shed more than 20 years ago, when she was aged between seven and nine, after she had helped him pick peas in the garden.

He also told her to take down her knickers before touching her indecently.

The second victim said he was indecently assaulted with a vacuum cleaner nozzle by Thorpe more than ten years ago.

Judge Benson said Thorpe abused the trust of his victims and their families. He must register as a sex offender for life and an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order bars him from contacting his victims or working with children.

After the case, Detective Inspector Vanessa Smith, of the Bradford District Safeguarding Unit, said: “Thorpe took advantage of his victims’ young ages and vulnerability to carry out indecent assaults on them.

“We would like to thank the victims for their courage in coming forward and hope that the sentence passed down today will help to bring them some closure. The Bradford District Safeguarding Unit has specially trained officers who will thoroughly investigate any reports of sexual abuse, whether historic or otherwise, with the aim of bringing the perpetrators to justice.”

Jury finds man committed dungeon abuse

lin

A 35-YEAR-OLD man sexually abused a young girl “in a dungeon” at Lisnaskea a jury at Omagh Crown Court has found.

Damien Wiggins, Trasna Way, Lisnaskea, was not found guilty of any criminal offence because he was deemed by the courts as unfit to plea.

However the jury found that he “committed the acts” outlined in four of the charges, namely four counts of gross indecency towards a child.

He originally faced 12 charges of sexually abusing two girls over the course of a 10 year period but six of those were withdrawn by the Public Prosecution Service (PPS).

On Monday last week the court heard that Wiggins was accused to sexually abusing two female children.

Giving evidence to the court one of them explained that while Wiggins had never physically forced her, she felt she had been “shamed” into allowing the sexual abuse to continue during her childhood until the age of 15.

She gave accounts of specific incidents where she alleged Wiggins had sexually abused her.

In her evidence she said she could not remember when the abuse began.

“When I was brought up it was a thing I had to do,” she said, “It happened when I was younger and so it was a feeling that I had to go and do it.”

In one account she recalled a meeting at the ruins of a castle close to the defendant’s home, in a room which she referred to in court as ‘the dungeons’.

“I knew what I was doing, but I had to go. He would say to me, ‘If you don’t meet me I’m going to tell your family about me and you’. He would say that on lots of occasions.

“He was standing in the corner of the dungeons. I could see his face and smell him. I just did what I had to do and got out of there,” she said.

In court the victim conceded that she had met with Wiggins voluntarily, “effectively by appointment” during each of the accounts she recalled in her evidence.

Crown Court judge Alistair Devlin is now tasked with deciding how Wiggins should be dealt with.

A pre-sentence report has been ordered to be brought before the judge by February 18.

Wiggins will appear at Coleraine Crown Court again on February 21 where he will learn what penalty he will face.

Man caught with child abuse images given last chance

A 23-year-old man who downloaded child abuse/exploitation images has been sentenced to a three-year community order.

Jason Elliott Eales admitted 10 counts of making indecent pictures, involving 326 images and movies, between April 2008 and August 2009.

Esther Harrison, prosecuting, said that the police stopped Eales in his car and became suspicious after finding a computer tower in the vehicle.

It was inspected and found to contain illegal images of underage children.

Miss Harrison said: “In interview he denied any knowledge of the material.

“He gave three addresses where he’d previously lived and named people who had access to his computer. These people were interviewed and it was clear they hadn’t accessed it. It was a red herring.”

At Leicester Crown Court, Judge Michael Pert QC was shown a sample of the images, prior to passing sentence.

Eales was given a community order, with three years supervision and a requirement to undergo a three-year sex offender rehabilitation course.

Judge Pert said: “I think you’re in need of assistance.

“The sort of images I’ve been shown are very unusual and disturbing for most people.

“It’s worrying a young man like you should be interested in such images.

“My choices are limited. I could send you to prison for a few months with no prospect of doing anything good in terms addressing your problems.

“Or I can pass a community order because I know you will get the programme that you need. But, if you re-offend, prison it will be.”

He ordered the destruction of Eales’s computer equipment.

The charges related to 125 images, including a film, at level one. Level one is the lowest level of seriousness and five the highest. There were 59 images, of which 28 were films, at level two; 19 images, of which seven were films, at level three; 119 images, including 41 films; at level four; and in the most serious category, at level five, there were four images, including three films. The images related to children mainly under 13, with two aged under five.

Eales, of Clarendon Road, Hinckley, was placed on a five-year sex offender prevention order.

It restricts his computer use and enables his computing devices to be monitored, and also restricts unsupervised contact with children.

He will have to enlist on a sex offender register for five years.

James Varley, mitigating, said Eales suffered from learning difficulties, was bullied at school and had problems making friends.

Mr Varley said: “He stopped (viewing the material) a few weeks before his arrest.

“He had his computer in the car, along with other goods, because he was moving address.

“He’s a young man who’s made a dreadful mistake and he bears the shame today in court in front of his mother.”

Paedophile has sentence appeal refused

On 29 April 1998 Colin Turnbull Reid was found guilty of two charges of lewd, indecent and libidinous practices and behaviour.

The first charge related to his conduct towards a girl on various occasions between 8 June 1992 and 12 October 1996, when she was 4-8 years of age. The second charge related to his conduct towards her younger sister on various occasions between 1 January 1995 and 12 October 1996 when she was 2-4 years of age.

Each of the girls gave evidence as to what was alleged in her case. In the case of the younger sister, this was that he had inserted his finger into her private parts and masturbated in her presence to the emission of semen.

In the case of the older girl, it was alleged that he had induced her to handle his private member and masturbate him to the emission of semen, and threatened her with violence if she disclosed his behaviour to others.

The judge stated the appeal was not well-founded. Accordingly it was refused.

Man’s Blackberry phone found with indecent images of children

A MAN has been warned he faces prison after his Blackberry phone was found storing 156 indecent images of children on it.

Kyle Roberts who is also known as Kyle Goatley, from Trewyddfa Common in Morriston, admitted 24 different charges during a hearing at Swansea Crown Court.

He admitted six offences of distributing indecent images, 17 of making indecent images of children and one of possessing the 156 images.

Such images are ranked by the authorities from level one to five where four is most serious.

These images range up to level four, the court was told.

James Hartson, representing Roberts, said: “The court will be concerned by the nature of the images in this case.”

He said they were of children of a “very young age” and had been found on his Blackberry Messaging service.

Judge Paul Thomas described them as being of a “extremely disturbing nature”.

He told Roberts, who is aged 21, that he will be sentenced once a report has been prepared on him by the probation service.

“There’s aspects of this case I find deeply troubling and that means I suspect sentencing isn’t going to be straight forward. You must expect a prison sentence when you come back. All options remain open but you cannot rule out that I will send you to prison,” said Judge Thomas.

The judge also made him subject to a Sexual Offenders Prevention Order.

That order means he can only possess a phone or computer capable of accessing the internet if it can store a search history on it and that device has to be presented to a police officer for inspection if required.

He will be sentenced at the end of the month.

Pervert found with 400 indecent pictures of boys told to get treatment by judge in Bristol

A YATE man found with almost 400 indecent pictures of young boys on his phone and computer has been told to get sex offender treatment.

Neil Morgan told police he had a “dark side” regarding such material, which he knew was wrong – but denied doing it for sexual gratification.

Morgan, 48, of Sandhurst, pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images.

Simon Goodman, prosecuting, said a police investigation established that Morgan had 130 indecent images of boys on his mobile phone and 263 indecent images of boys on his computer.

Some 500 photos of boys in swimwear were found, as well as 1,500 pictures not deemed indecent.

Morgan admitted downloading and storing photos of boys aged between 12 and 15, in various states of undress, the court heard.

Mr Goodman said: “He thought there would be around 1,000 images and he said he last accessed them two months previously.

“He said he hadn’t downloaded them at home and told police ‘it’s a dark side of me’ and ‘I know it’s wrong’.”

Morgan claimed to gain no sexual gratification from his photo collection, the court was told.

John Stokes, defending, said: “He wishes to convey his deep shame so far as the harm which falls on the children. He recognises the harm caused.

“He does wish to work with the probation service.”

Judge Julian Lambert said he would sentence Morgan to a community order involving three years’ supervision, “to ensure this interest is scourged.”

Morgan must also undergo up to two months of sex offender treatment and is now subject to a 10-year sexual offences prevention order, banning him from any access to the internet unless there is a retrievable browsing history available for inspection by the police.

He must also register as a sex offender for the same 10-year period.

The judge told Morgan: “With your offence comes the shame for you.

“The likelihood is you will lose your job as a result.

“You are of previous good character and are thought to be treatable by the probation service.”

The judge said Morgan’s interest in child images was deep-seated and said highly unusual aspects of his background may have caused it.

Grinning side by side with youngsters at a cycling club are two members who shared a chilling secret.

The face on the right in this 39-year-old photograph is a young Roy Whiting, who would grow up to be eight-year-old Sarah Payne’s infamous killer.

On his left stands the sinister club coach he “idolised” but who struck terror into the children under his rule – fellow paedophile Mike Green.

The astonishing picture emerged yesterday as Green, now 71, awaits sentence for a string of brutal sex attacks on youngsters between 1981 and 1982.

It was unearthed by a witness who gave evidence at Green’s trial.

Our source, who was targeted by the pervert but escaped his clutches, said: “Greeny chose Whiting as the captain of the team, which shows how close they were. Whiting idolised him and looked up to him.

“They were a tight-knit group and Greeny was a mentor for Whiting. They took part in several of the same races. Some boys talked about Greeny trying to force them into sex, but back then we didn’t understand what a paedophile was.”

Police began investigating him when a victim came forward in 2011 and told how he sexually assaulted him in the early 1980s after leaving the speedway cycling team.

Three further victims also agreed to talk to detectives. The boys were aged between 13 and 15 when they were abused.

Green, who also founded an ice hockey team in Brighton and coached British speedway champions, was arrested early last year. He was convicted at Hove Trial Centre on Tuesday on four counts of buggery and four of indecent assault.

Whiting – now serving life for Sarah’s abduction and murder in July 2000 – came under Green’s influence at Crawley Tigers speedway team when he was 15.

Pals noted how Whiting became close to their “creepy” coach despite them saying they thought he was a pervert.

Speaking after Green was found guilty, our source said: “Greeny was always very touchy feely.

“It started out as something of a rumour among the lads about him being a pervert. Everybody was talking about it and Whiting would have been aware. He spent a lot of time with the boys and he took advantage of that.

“One night I stayed at his house because we were going to an event early next day.

“He wanted to stay in the same room as me and have my friend stay in another room. He then started asking if he could touch me and I said no and told him where to go.

“He told me to be quiet because it would wake his mother up.

“Once he knew I wouldn’t be quiet he got up and went into the other room where my friend was staying.

“Looking back I should have warned my friend and not just stayed silent. My friend never said what had happened.”

Whiting, whose father sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl at a swimming pool, went on to become a car mechanic.

He snatched Sarah Payne and bundled her into his van as she walked to her grandparents’ home in West Sussex. She was sexually abused and murdered, and her naked body was found in a shallow grave 17 days later.

It later emerged Whiting had served time for abducting and sexually assaulting an eight-year-old girl in Crawley in 1995.

Our source added: “Who knows what effect Greeny had on Whiting all those years ago.”
