Pensioner jailed for sex offences against three schoolgirls in North Wales

A PENSIONER has been jailed for sexual offences against three schoolgirls.

Lawrence Thompson, 78, formerly of Hawarden, was a self-employed business consultant who worked as a volunteer mentor for a schools young enterprise scheme to encourage youngsters into business.

But he resigned after a complaint that he had groped a schoolgirl during a trip to a business fair.

Thompson, now of Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, admitted charges of sexual touching and sexual activity with a child, which occurred in Flintshire, Wrexham and Rhyl.

He was jailed for eight months, placed on the sex offender register for a decade and a 10-year sexual harm prevention order was made.

Judge Niclas Parry told Mold Crown Court there were three separate victims and Thompson’s conduct went on over a four-year period.

In one case there had been an element of grooming.

In another he had placed himself in a working environment, although voluntary, which gave him access to young girls.

He had grabbed a young girl’s bottom and slapped her. In the third case he took the opportunity to sexually touch a young girl.

There was a significant disparity in age and he had sought to minimise what he had done.

The judge said it was not a case of an elderly man offending in an age when attitudes were different.

He had offended in the modern age when there was huge publicity about sexual offences.

“You knew what you were doing was wrong,” he said.

His greatest mitigation was his guilty plea, said the judge.

He said Thompson had led an industrious life; he had no previous convictions and importantly there had been no touching of the naked breasts or genetalia.

But in view of the number of victims, the period of offending and the aggravating features, eight months would have to be served immediately and it would not be suspended, he said.

Elen Owen, prosecuting, said in interview Thompson admitted buying alcohol and tobacco for one girl, but denied anything sexual took place. He had also admitted touching the other two.

Defending barrister Simon Rogers said there had been no touching of the victims’ naked bodies and Thompson had not tried to get them to touch him. The level of offending was at the lower end, he said.

The complainants did not have to give evidence and Thompson’s guilty pleas also indicated his remorse, Mr Rogers said. Thompson accepted some responsibility, an important factor in his rehabilitation.

The defendant was a man with three grown-up children in their 30s and his daughter had attended court to support him, Mr Rogers added.

He had been a hard-working man and retired last year after running his own business consultancy.

Thompson was someone who had been very well thought of and the loss of his good character was something that affected him greatly.

Mr Rogers said the offences cast a great shadow over his client and his good work over the years.

Man sentenced to nine years for sex offences

poole

A MAN was this week sent to prison for nine years after being found guilty of a string of sexual offences.

William Poole, of Eign Road, St James, Hereford, was found guilty after a trial of:

  • Two counts of assault on a child under 13 by penetration

  • Two counts of sexual activity with a child

  • Three counts of making indecent photographs of a child.

Hereford Crown Court heard the offences took place between May 2012 and September 2014.

Judge Daniel Pearce-Higgins QC, sentencing Poole on Tuesday, labelled the case as “sad but serious”.

He said: “These offences happened on the background of the breakdown of his marriage.

“The child sexual abuse images was all part of the same perverted desire.”

James Dunston, prosecuting, said the victim was left psychologically harmed.

A victim impact statement read to the court said: “He has ruined my life and part of my childhood.”

Simon Philips, defending, disputed these claims and said he did not think she was “severely psychologically harmed”.

He added that a report would be required to prove this.

In addition to the prison sentence, Poole was made the subject of a restraining order and sexual prevention order.

Facebook pervert jailed after trying to meet girl, 11, for sex

A Facebook predator has been put behind bars after a worried mum posed as her 11-year-old daughter who he was trying to meet for sex.

Jonathan Evans, 23, had befriended the schoolgirl on the social networking site and they exchanged messages as he started his campaign to groom her.

When the girl’s mother checked her account, she realised her under-age daughter had been communicating with a grown man so decided to step in and took over the conversation, under her child’s name.

Despite knowing how young the girl was, Evans quickly turned the conversation to sex and arranged to meet her at Eldon Square, in Newcastle.

Thanks to the mum’s actions, Evans was arrested and is now starting an eight month jail sentence.

The mum said in a statement to the court: “My fear is the thought of what could have been and what would have happened if she had agreed to meet him.

“How many children have agreed to meet people and didn’t return home?

“When I told him her real age the conversation really changed to him talking dirty. I found it disgusting.

“This is one of the things I’m struggling with, that somebody could speak to a child in this way when they know how old they are.

“These events have affected me more than my daughter as we have tried to protect her from what has gone on.”

Jonathan Devlin, prosecuting, told Newcastle Crown Court the offending took place last year.

He said: “The matter came to light when the child’s mother opened the child’s Facebook account in May last year and saw messages from the defendant.

“The lady became concerned about why an adult was sending messages to her 11-year-old daughter and she entered the conversation, pretending to be that girl.

“The police advised her to maintain contact with the suspect to establish what he might say.”

Evans had believed the girl was 16 for a time but the mother, posing as her daughter, told him she was 12, a year older than her actual age.

Mr Devlin said: “Having been told her age the language then became sexual.

“He said he couldn’t (have sex with) her because he would get done if he got caught.

“He suggested they went out together and told her not to tell anyone.

“He continued to ask whether she would be prepared to have intercourse with him.

“Arrangements were made for a meeting on the following Monday.

“He repeated a number of times that he wanted to know whether she would have sex with him.

“The conversation was highly sexualised. Mention was made of condoms and he was concerned about her becoming pregnant.”

Evans’ plan was thwarted when police swooped the night before he had arranged to meet who he thought was the girl, at Eldon Square.

When he was arrested he said he was on drugs at the time he sent the messages and denied intending to meet the child or wanting to have sex with her.

Mr Devlin said: “He said he knew she was well under the age of 16.”

Evans, of Field Terrace, Throckley, Newcastle, pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming and was jailed for eight months.

He was heard shouting, swearing and punching or kicking a door as he was led into custody.

Orangemen failed to expel sex offender

The Orange Order failed to expel a convicted sex offender who became the first person in Northern Ireland banned from loitering near schools.

James McGivern, 57, of Lime Grove in Lurgan, appeared in court last Monday where he was ordered to avoid schools, parks, playgrounds and teenage discos after complaints from parents in the Craigavon area.

McGivern, who has two convictions for sex offences in the early Nineties, belongs to an Orange Lodge in Portadown and is a member of Ian Paisley’s Free Presbyterian church there. He belongs to Orange lodge LOL 352 – the Derrykeevin Temperance Lodge – whose members are teetotal on religious grounds.

According to the Orange Order rulebook a member can be expelled if found guilty of ‘conduct unbecoming of an Orangeman’. Despite convictions dating back a decade, McGivern remained a member of LOL 352, attending protests at Drumcree.

RUC officers convinced the court to ban McGivern from schools, parks, playgrounds and other places where children played.

He can be arrested if seen near such places.

The court agreed that McGivern was ‘posing a renewed threat to the community’. This was the first time the police were granted powers under the 1997 Sex Offenders Order to restrict movements of a convicted sex offender in Northern Ireland.

The order was imposed for five years after parents of a nine-year-old girl alleged McGivern approached her as she left school in Lurgan.

Man sexually exploited a teenage girl

A 27-year-old man has avoided a prison sentence for the sexual exploitation of a schoolgirl.

Theodore McGivern of Grove Meadow, Ballinahinch Lower, Newtownmountkennedy, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court last Thursday to meeting a child for the purpose of sexual exploitation at a location in Dublin on June 13, 2013.

McGivern, who has no previous convictions, also admitted to sending an indecent message by telephone some time between June 8 and June 13, 2013.

The court heard that the defendant sent a photograph of his erect penis to a 15-year-old girl just days after meeting her in Dublin City Centre.

He was aware that at the time she was sitting her Junior Certificate and had telephoned her after some of her exams to see how they had gone.

The victim told gardaí that she later invited McGivern into her home where they went to her bedroom and he touched various areas of her body.

He stopped when the victim told him to do so.

Garnet Orange SC, defending, said that forensic psychological services had assessed McGivern as an ‘anxious, immature and psychologically vulnerable man’ who has ‘difficulty understanding the nuances of social communication.’

The assessment also stated McGivern is subject to suicidal ideation.

Another assessment found he has ‘elevated levels of impulsivity and finds it difficult to resist temptation.’

The assessment further stated that the defendant has a ‘significant number of traits associated with autistic spectrum disorder.’

He was also deemed psychologically vulnerable and has an active fantasy life.

The victim met McGivern while she was standing outside a shop on Dame Street, along with a friend of hers.

McGivern said she had a nice ass and then went into a shop and bought some alcohol for the under-age pair.

He told the girls he was 25 and the victim replied that she was 15 and her friend was 16.

At one point he made a sexual remark to the younger girl.

The following day he met up with the 15-year-old and kissed her.

He went on to ‘friend’ her on Facebook and rang her a few days later after one of her exams.

He also sent her a picture of his face.

They met again a few days later outside her college and kissed again.

Later the same day, he rang her again and said he wanted to kiss her all over her body.

He told her he was aroused and would like to have sexual relations with her.

She became embarrassed and held the phone away from her. Shortly after the call had ended, McGivern sent a picture of his penis to her mobile phone.

Two days later she asked him to come to her house and they kissed and he suggested they go to her bedroom where he touched her breast and bottom.

Judge Martin Nolan said the medical reports give grounds to believe that McGivern may be autistic.

He said that the accused’s behaviour was ‘deeply inappropriate.’

However, he was satisfied that McGivern was not a danger to society.

The judge said McGivern’s actions led to his detection and that this gave him some comfort that he was not a devious person.

He imposed a two-and-a-half year sentence which he suspended for two years.

He also ordered that McGivern have no contact with the girl and that he undergo two years probation supervision.

Garda Sharon O’Donogue agreed that McGivern was a bit of a loner and showed a lack of maturity.

Mr. Orange, defending, said this was a disturbing and upsetting case, but not one in which McGivern had hidden behind a false identity in order to groom a child victim.

He said his client had been open about his own age and his identity and was readily traceable.

McGivern initially told gardaí he thought she was 17 but later admitted that this was unrealistic if she was sitting her Junior Cert.

Mr. Orange said it wouldn’t be unknown for younger people to describe themselves as older.

He submitted that perhaps the girls had exuded a maturity beyond their years while his client had shown an immaturity for his age.

He added that the meeting of the girls was in the context of larger groups of young people of various ages meeting up around the Central Bank and St Stephen’s Green in Dublin city and skateboarding and hanging around.

Child sex offender supported by ‘nearest and dearest’

A COURT has heard that a 54-year-old Convoy man who sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl has the support of his “nearest and dearest”.

Fergus Carson of The Green, Main Street, was convicted and given a five-year jail sentence, with the final fifteen months suspended, on Friday following a trial earlier this year by a Central Criminal Court.

The jury found him guilty of six counts of sexual assault of the girl at a relatives house between May and September 2012. The girl has waived her right to anonymity.

Carson, who has no previous convictions, does not accept the verdict of the jury.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt said he took a global view of victim impact statements and while it was important to take them on board, they were not the “be all and end all.”

He said the effect of the offending on a young girl was “pretty obvious” and he did not think this particular statement was “out of the ordinary.”

Mr Justice Hunt said Carson had abused his position of having access to the house where she was staying and took advantage of the fact he knew her family would be away at certain times.

He said there had been a cluster of assaults over the five months with the most serious involving one instance of digital (finger) penetration of the girl.

He noted this was the first time Carson had come into conflict with the law and that he would now be obliged to serve a custodial sentence at a relatively advanced point in his life.

Mr Justice Hunt said the opprobrium of being a sex offender with its attendant shame and publicity would continue after the sentence ends and the fact it happened within a small community would be difficult for everyone in the future.

He noted the offences had a serious effect on the girl in the context of normal adolescent development which was undoubtedly skewed, as well as the general effects one would expect.

Judge Hunt imposed a five year sentence but suspended the final 15 months for two years. He ordered Carson to undergo 12 months post release supervision.

Garda Michelle Kelly told Conor Devally SC, prosecuting, that the girl had known Carson all her life and he knew what age she was. She was alone in a relatives house when

Carson let himself in. He kissed her but she felt it was not in greeting and was uncomfortable.

She described how Carson later placed his hands down her trousers and kissed her passionately.

He also placed her hand on his penis and said she should be doing something for him.

On the final occasion she was upstairs changing a sheet on a bed when she heard Carson come into the house. He came upstairs, pushed her onto the bed and got on top of her.

Afterwards she tried to keep away from the accused but continued to see him. Her mother became aware of what had happened and Carson was arrested. He denied that the events had occurred.

In her victim impact report, the woman said giving evidence in the trial had been the hardest thing she had ever done and the last four years had been “hell.” She said she felt “inhibited” in her locality and did not go out socially.

She said reaction to the complaint locally had been unwelcome and had made life difficult.

Gda Kelly agreed with defence counsel that Carson had engaged fully with Gardaí during interview and denied involvement.

Mr Fogarty told the court that Carson maintained his innocence and asked for leniency.

He said Carson had lived his whole life without coming to the attention of Gardaí and these allegations had been devastating to him and his family.

He said there had been a rift in the small community but that Carson’s “nearest and dearest” were supporting him.

Internet pervert admits downloading images of children being abused

gm

An internet pervert has admitted downloading images of children being abused.

Gavin John Moore, 37, pleaded guilty to eight offences of making and possessing indecent images of children on various dates between October 16, 2009 and September 13 last year.

However, the supermarket employee denied a further 20 similar charges while two counts of possessing a total of 21,972 images were not put.

The counts were put to Moore in their short form with the specific titles of the images, many of them graphic in nature, not read out by the clerk at Downpatrick Crown Court.

Defence lawyer Ian Turkington submitted that Moore’s guilty pleas “to each category of using and possessing [the images] covers the case” but prosecution lawyer Sam Magee said he would have to take instructions from his authorities as to whether the admissions met the justice of the case.

Moore, originally from Comber but now with an address on the Gortnageeragh Road in Ballymena, was released on continuing bail and ordered by Judge Gordon Kerr QC to come back to court next Tuesday to hear the PPS attitude.

Meanwhile, a man who had more than 3,000 indecent images of children on his computer has escaped a jail sentence.

Lawrence Henderson of Kilwilke Road, Lurgan, was placed on probation for three years on Thursday at Craigavon Crown Court on child pornography charges.

He had pleaded guilty to 26 charges of making an indecent photograph of a child and one charge of having in his possession 3,354 indecent photographs of children.

He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register.

The court heard the offences came to light when Henderson took his computer to a shop in Lurgan to have it repaired.

Staff discovered pornographic images and contacted police who arrested the 32-year-old when he returned to collect the computer.

The computer contained 208 category one pictures and four category two images.

And 3,347 category one pictures and one category two photograph were found on an external hard drive recovered during a search of his home and this contained

Henderson admitted to police that he had pornography on his computer but claimed the girls were aged over 18.

A prosecutor who had viewed the photographs said the maximum age of the girls would have been 12 to 13.

Judge Patrick Lynch told Henderson he had brought shame upon himself and his family.

Dudley driving instructor Gary Rolinson jailed over sex abuse

gary

A “predatory” driving instructor who sexually abused six boys during their lessons has been jailed.

Gary Rolinson ran the 500+ driving school in Kingswinford when he abused the boys over a period of two years.

One victim said the 60-year-old would rub his legs to “congratulate” him for driving well, or “squeeze” parts of his body if he “did something wrong”.

Rolinson, now living in Llandrindod Wells, was jailed for four years after a trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

He was found guilty of 12 counts of of sexual assault and one of causing a person to engage in sexual activity.

West Midlands Police described Rolinson as “a predatory offender” who told the boys they would not be believed if they reported he assaults.

One victim said: “To congratulate you for doing something right, say checking a blind spot before pulling off, he would move his hands over and start to rub your leg.

“If you did something wrong he’d squeeze certain parts of your body.”

He added: “It’s been such a lengthy process. The amount of stress that’s been put on me and my family has been unreal.”

After the sentencing, Det Insp Sarah Booth said: “Some of the victims have also said that they felt embarrassed and that they didn’t want to tell their parents, because they felt their parents would be upset because they had arranged Rolinson to be instructors for them.”

Rolinson must also sign the sex offenders register for life.

Pervert ‘laminated’ indecent images of young boys for sexual gratification

An unemployed pervert from Truro has avoided an immediate prison sentence after being caught with hundreds of indecent images of young boys on his laptop and other electronic devices.

Justin Endean, 42, of Rosedale Road, was found with devices containing scores of photographs and videos – including some in the most serious category which included children being raped – as a result of a police operation targeting those who buy DVDs containing indecent images.

Prosecutor Heather Hope told Truro Crown Court today that police searched his address on December 1, 2014

“In his home, under his bed, police found an indecent image of an underage boy and another 48 indecent still images of young boys,” she said.

“They also seized a number of digital devices and sent them off for forensic examination.”

The court heard that Endean was interviewed at Newquay Police Station where he admitted to looking at images online, but said he believed they were legitimate and that they weren’t illegal.

Miss Hope added: “Mr Endean made a full and frank admission and accepted he’d downloaded images and some of them he admitted he’d laminated to keep for future use by himself.

“He also admitted he had bought DVDs containing indecent images of children.”

Judge Christopher Harvey Clark QC explained how Endean’s offending took place largely during the years 2009 to 2010.

Judge Christopher Harvey Clark told Endean that his jail sentence would be suspended because he has given a “full and frank admission” of his guilt.

The judge said: “You frankly admitted to the probation officer that you find naked photos of boys aged between 10 and 15 sexually arousing, and as you know, such images involve underage children.

“You also implicated to [the probation officer] that talking about this aspect of your life was a weight being lifted off your shoulders.

“You seem relieved to be able to talk about it and bring it out into the open. I bear in mind you made a full and frank admission to the police.”

The judge added: “You clearly get sexual gratification from this type of image but you must remember it is illegal.”

Endean was given an eight month prison sentence, suspended for a year, with a 12 month supervision order.

A sexual harm prevention order – which includes terms such as forcing Endean only to access the internet when his search history can be displayed and making that available on request to a police officer – was put in place for 10 years.

Endean must sign the sex offender’s register, where he will remain for 10 years.

His Toshiba laptop and three USB sticks were also ordered to be destroyed.

Married teacher jailed for sex with pupil

caldwell

A teacher who had an affair with a pupil then kept it a secret for more than a decade has been jailed after he tried to get back into contact with her over Facebook.

Gary Caldwell was 35 when he had a year-long fling with the 16-year-old girl during which he sent her love letters and poems saying ‘you make me lustful’ and ‘you have awakened the beast’.

The relationship remained a secret until last year when Caldwell, now 51 and a married father-of-two, sent the former pupil a friend request on the social media site.

The memories of what happened triggered panic attacks in the former pupil, a court heard, and she went to police.

Caldwell, who was still teaching at St Gregory’s Catholic High School in Warrington, Cheshire, was suspended from his job and has now been jailed for 21 months for engaging in sexual activity whilst in a position of trust.

The court heard Caldwell had been a teacher at the school for 20 years but in the year 2000 he began grooming the Year 11 pupil in his classroom when he was left alone with her in between lessons.

The jury was told he would ask the girl ‘overtly sexual conversations’ and would ask her about her boyfriend saying ‘the best thing you can do for a lad is to perform oral sex’.

He also set ‘challenges’ for her, including getting her to wear a type of high-heeled shoe to school in order to satisfy a ‘particular sexual fetish’, the court heard.

Prosecutors said he then encourage the girl to touch him intimately in the classroom and repeatedly told her not to tell anyone because ‘she would be the one who would get into trouble’. He also took her to a pop concert.

The former pupil told the hearing: ‘We would text about general chit chat. I told him I liked him and he responded saying he likes me but “he wasn’t allowed to” or I “wasn’t allowed to tell anyone”.

‘He got an e-mail address used specifically for me and would ask what I had been up to with my boyfriend. The texts were daily, even when I was in school. He was sending texts of a sexual nature.

The woman said the pair had an ‘affair’ while Caldwell was married after she left school. She said it continued for ‘roughly a year’ before she brought the relationship to an end. But she claimed Caldwell would attempt to follow her bus to college and go to her house.

She broke off the relationship but when, more than a decade later, he contacted her on Facebook, the memories of their relationship had a damaging effect on her, the court heard.

Over an eight-month period after he posted the friend request in January 2015, she would avoid driving past the school, she said.

Caldwell denied any fling and said ‘sexual’ phrases used in a poem were ‘light-hearted’ and ‘throwaway clichés’.

He added: ‘I did not see pupils on my own – it was against school policy. There would be major problems if it happened. I don’t know what would happen as it never did. I did not give out relationship advice. Teachers would not give numbers out to pupils – it was an accepted rule of the job.’

Caldwell pleaded not guilty to six charges of engaging in sexual activity whilst in a position of trust but was convicted after a trial.

Jailing him this week, the judge Mr Recorder Simon Mills told him: ‘She was 16-years-old in your care, in your classroom and in your trust. This has to be looked at in the light of the position of power and influence you had over her.

‘What you did was to groom and seduce her in the hope that that would develop into a full sexual relationship when you should have been teaching her, all purely for your own sexual interest.

‘You have betrayed her, your profession and your school – your conduct was nothing short of a disgrace and you continued to try to lie your way out of it up until this day.

‘When you gave evidence you showed a strange combination of desperation and arrogance to put an innocent slant on your clear lies.

‘You stooped to make a gratuitous attempt on the victim’s character and accused her of seeking to profit through compensation – you have not shown any remorse whatsoever.

‘What you did caused serious and long-lasting harm – the harm you caused and the absence of any remorse means that an immediate custodial sentence is inevitable.’

Caldwell was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for a period of 10 years and pay £100 costs.

Warwick man asked for naked image of a five-year-old to be sent to his phone

After uploading an indecent image of a child onto an internet site a man was traced by the police who found he had more than 190 other images of children as young as five.

But despite having tried to persuade someone to send him naked pictures of that young man’s five-year-old sister, Mark Goor has escaped being jailed.

Instead he was given a ten-month sentence suspended for two years by a judge at Warwick Crown Court and ordered to take part in a sex offender programme.

Mark Goor, 27, of Old Budbrooke Road, Hampton Magna, near Warwick, who had pleaded guilty to making indecent images of children and possessing extreme pornography, also has to register as a sex offender for ten years.

Elizabeth Power, prosecuting, said that as far back as April 2014 a category B indecent image, showing a child involved in a non-penetrative sex act, was uploaded onto the Instagram website.

An investigation led to the person who posted it being identified as Goor, and in July that year the police went to his home and seized his laptop and phone.

There was nothing incriminating on the laptop, but Miss Power pointed out Goor had only bought it a few weeks earlier.

However, on the phone were a number of indecent images of children, mainly pre-pubescent girls as young as five, and conversations showing he had an interest in young girls.

There were 72 category A images, defined as showing children being subjected to penetrative sex acts, 60 category B images and 60 category C images of children in naked or indecent poses but without sexual activity.

The majority were stills, but there were 10 category A movies, 10 category B movies and two category C.

In addition there was a movie classed as extreme pornography, involving sex acts between a woman and an animal.

The police also found text conversations including one where Goor asked the other person whether he had a sister.

Told that that young man had sisters aged five and 11, Goor responded: “Lucky. So you get to see them naked. Have you tried to do anything with them?”

The reply came back: “No, they’d tell my mum.”

But Goor then went on to ask for a naked picture of the younger girl to be sent to him.

When he was interviewed Goor, told police he already had a caution for sexual activity with a girl under the age of 16

Hartlepool internet pervert left judge shocked after admitting to ‘a catalogue of sexual offending’

Carl Hutchinson

A paedophile who doctored innocent holiday snaps of children and distributed them on the internet was jailed for five years by a judge who said that the case had shocked him.

Maintenance worker Carl Hutchinson, 29, from Greatham, was also ordered to serve another 12 months on licence when he is released and put on the Sex Offender’s Register for life.

The mother of one of the children said that she felt sick to the stomach when police told her what he had done.

Police tracked him down during routine surveillance of Twitter and Facebook activity.

Judge Shaun Morris told smartly dressed Hutchinson at Teesside Crown Court: “You have pleaded guilty to a catalogue of sexual offending which shocked me, and I take some shocking.”

One of the original photos contained three children and Hutchinson and another paedophile who he was in regular contact with on the internet superimposed sick sexual images on the pictures.

The judge said: “They are out there now for the rest of time.

”There were two families and you obtained pictures of their children and you put them deliberately on Facebook and, with the assistance of one of your paedophile friends, turning what was a happy family scene into one of debauchery.

“And you rewarded your friend by sending him pictures from your library.”

The judge added: “It does not get much worse in my book.”

Prosecutor Harry Hadfield said that one photo had been taken at Seaton Carew.

He said the aggravating features of the case were that that most of the child porn which Hutchinson distributed on the internet was at the most serious level Category A, and it was an incitement to other perverts.

It featured children as young as two, with one video lasting 50 minutes.

Mr Hadfield said Hutchinson had handled 145 images at Category A, 107 at B and 135 at C, and the majority of the girls were aged four to eight.

Hutchinson, of Greatham but whose court record address was Gloucester Road, Bristol, pleaded guilty to three charges of encouraging the commission of offences, three of distributing indecent photographs, two of making indecent photographs, and one each of possession of extreme pornography and having an obscene article for publication.

The judge also made a Sexual Harm Prevention Order restricting Hutchinson’s use of the internet and contact with children, which he said would protect the public as much as he could.

Lower Earley rapist jailed for seven and a half years

Brian-Russell

A man from Lower Earley has been jailed for seven and a half years for two rape offences and sexual activity with a child.

Brian Russell, 30, of Clevedon Drive was given two seven and a half year sentences for raping an underage girl and a further four year sentence for having sex with another underage girl.

The concurrent sentences were handed down at Reading Crown Court on Friday, May 13.

Judge Ian Grainger called the night of the offences, on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 a “squalid private orgy” where one girl was raped twice by Russell.

One of the victims knew Russell before the incident and the two girls stayed at his home after finding themselves without a place to sleep on the night of Monday, August 11, 2014.

Judge Grainger admitted one girl had sex with Russell consensually but said: “The law is there to protect girls against themselves as well as those like you prepared to take advantage of their youth.”

The counsel for the defence, Steven Talbot Hadley said his client “vehemently denies the allegations”.

Russell, a father-of-six, was found guilty by a unanimous jury vote of one count of sexual activity with a child and unanimously guilty of one count of rape, the jury reached a majority verdict on the second count of rape on Monday, April 25 following a week-long trial at Reading Crown Court .

Russell was arrested on Thursday, October 2, 2014 and charged with the offences on Friday, May 15 last year.

Pervert jailed after exposing himself

cave

THIS is the 26-year-old man who has been jailed for a year and a half after following women and children whilst touching himself.

Ian Campbell exposed himself in public and began touching himself three times in just five days.

One of the crimes saw a hooded Campbell follow a 25-year-old and her child through Goaters Road Park in Ascot.

He followed coming as close as just two metres away from his victims.

The first offence saw him target a 31-year-old woman who was walking in Allsmoor Park with her child and dog.

Campbell followed her, pulling his trousers down and exposing himself at 9am on May 28.

The same day he stood in front of a 30-year-old dog walker in Longhill Park.

He was standing in a wooded area, three metres from his victim touching himself.

Some 10 minutes later, at around 5.40pm she saw him again, still touching himself.

Investigating officer, detective sergeant Marc Skinner of Bracknell CID said: “These offences have had a significant and undoubtedly long lasting effect on the victims.

“To be approached by a man exposing himself, in a secluded wooded area, can only be described as terrifying.

“Two of the victims had young babies with them at the time, making them even more vulnerable.

“Campbell preyed on these victims for his own sexual gratification. This was a complex investigation, hindered by Campbell’s attempts to conceal his identity from his victims by wearing a face covering on more than one occasion.

“Now convicted, Campbell will be carefully monitored to prevent him offending in the future upon his release from prison.”

Campbell, of Fernbank Crescent, Ascot, was convicted by a majority jury at Reading Crown Court on Wednesday, April 6.

He was sentenced to 78 weeks imprisonment for three counts of indecent exposure at the same court on Friday, May 6.

He was also given a sexual harm prevention order that will run for five years from the date of his release.

The court was told that Jarvis has been in and out of prison over the years for burglary and drug offences.

He will be sentenced at a later date

Sex attacker who groped teenage girl has jail sentence backed by top judges

A sex attacker who groped a teenager after plying her with home-made booze and was jailed at Reading Crown Court had his sentence backed by top judges – despite claims that his victim was “not a young and innocent girl”.

Simon Raglan, 47, was caged for two years in October last year after he was convicted of sexually assaulting his 16-year-old victim.

Raglan, of Parkhill Road, Blackwater, Camberley, was also hit with a sexual offences prevention order (SOPO) barring him from unregulated contact with minors.

He was cleared of two other counts of sexual assault.

The case reached London’s Appeal Court as Raglan challenged both his conviction and sentence today.

His QC, Howard Godfrey, claimed the jury should have been discharged from returning a verdict as it was clear they had reached a complete deadlock.

The jury foreperson had told the trial judge they were unlikely to reach a verdict after hours of deliberation, Mrs Justice Lang said.

But she refused to abandon the trial – instead sending the jurors back home overnight to continue their deliberations the next day.

The following day, they convicted Raglan of one sexual assault charge by a majority.

Mrs Justice Lang, sitting with Lord Justice Davis and Mr Justice Lewis, said there was no evidence that the jury had felt under “any kind of pressure”.

“We consider it was reasonable to allow them further time, providing the judge made clear that they were not being placed under any such pressure.

“We conclude that the jury was not placed under any improper pressure and therefore there are no arguable grounds for appealing this conviction.”

Mr Godfrey, also challenging both the two-year jail term and the SOPO, argued that Raglan should have received a suspended sentence.

He cited Raglan’s previous good character and his role as a family man and father.

“He is not a deviant or a paedophile,” said the QC, adding that Raglan was guilty of a “one-off and out of character” assault.

“This was not a young and innocent girl,” said the barrister, who claimed that she was “not unaccustomed to drinking”.

But Mrs Justice Lang concluded that Raglan’s sentence was “neither wrong in principle nor manifestly excessive”.

Raglan’s victim had suffered “significant adverse effects” from the attack.

Also upholding the SOPO Mrs Justice Lang said the offence occurred “after he gave her excessive amounts of drink”.

He admitted making 34,583 indecent images of children between January 2010 and January 2015.

Arnold had 469 photographs in the most vile category, showing the rape of children by adults.

Arnold of Russell Court in Tavistock, further pleaded guilty to possession of 595 prohibited images of a child in January last year.

Recorder John Williams adjourned sentence for a probation officer to prepare a report on his background.

He warned Arnold: “You are looking at a substantial period of prison but there may be an alternative.”

Arnold was released on conditional bail to return to court for sentence on May 20. He must not have any unsupervised contact with anyone aged under 18.

ABUSED BY MY UNCLE … AND NOT EVEN MUM BELIEVED ME

A brave Scots mum has spoken out about the childhood abuse that ripped her family apart – because no one believed her.

Debbie, 35, was just seven when her uncle Kevin, then 17, pounced on her during a family get-together in West Lothian.

The mum-of-six confided in relatives but no one, not even her mum, took her seriously.

Instead, Debbie waited more than 25 years for Kevin Nichol, 45, to be sentenced for the offence.

But despite him dodging jail, Debbie is pleased that she’s finally got the acknowledgement she desperately deserved.

Debbie, from Roxburghshire, has now waived her anonymity to encourage other victims of sexual offences to step forward.

“A lot of my childhood memory is quite vague. I just have snippets of things,” Debbie said.

“But I remember when I was seven like it was yesterday. I’ll always remember it as the day I was called a liar.”

Debbie was visiting grandmother Margaret in Uphall, West Lothian when her innocence was snatched away.

She said: “After tea, me and my sisters were taken upstairs to bed. I was sharing a room with my older sister, Caroline [38]. She was in the spare bed and I was in a put-you-up behind the door.

“I fell asleep, but at about 10pm something woke me up. I remember opening my eyes and seeing Kevin standing in the doorway.

“He just stood and watched for a while before leaving. I couldn’t sleep after that.

“A little later he came back in and lay down beside me. He pulled down his pants and started caressing himself and rubbing himself against me.

“Then he started touching me. I’d been pretending I was asleep, but it started to hurt so I stirred and moaned.”

With Debbie ‘awake’, Kevin rushed out of the room. Debbie followed, hoping for the comforting arms of her parents.

But the reaction was far from what she expected.

“I remember cuddling up to my mum, who was sitting down with the family, and bursting into tears,” Debbie recalled.

“I told her that uncle Kevin had touched me. She went crazy and was taken to the kitchen to calm down.

“By this time Kevin had left the house. Gran took me aside and told me I was just being silly and that nothing happened.

“She told my mum the same and she believed her over me.”

Debbie was taken to bed for a second time. She went to sleep, hoping for support and comfort in the morning.

But, at breakfast, it was as if nothing had happened.

Debbie said: “Even at that age I knew what he’d done was wrong. I couldn’t understand why everyone was acting so normal.

“It was brushed under the carpet, never to be spoken of again. Whenever I brought the subject up I was treated like a liar.”

Angry and frustrated, Debbie started to rebel. During her teens she’d skip school, get into fights and take her anger out on younger sister Kelly, now 33.

“I had an anger that wouldn’t go away,” Debbie explained.

“I’d still see Kevin at the occasional family event. He’d just sneak a glance at me then turn away.

“When I was around 13 or 14, though, I separated myself from my dad’s side of the family. I didn’t want to see them anymore.

“I still loved my parents, but part of me hated them too. I felt like they’d chosen that monster over me.”

Debbie’s rebellion came to a halt when she fell pregnant at 18. And, after holding the baby, now 17, for the first time she had a realisation.

She said: “I knew I was going to do everything I could for my daughter and never let anyone hurt her.”

Over the next three years, she had two more children, now 14, and 13.

Debbie was still trying to run from her past, though, and so moved to a quiet cul-de-sac in York.

It was here that Debbie met her future husband. They started dating in January 2001 and married in April 2003.

Debbie said: “I felt at ease with him. Even though it didn’t disappear, my anger towards my family took a sideline.

“I told him about my uncle Kevin before we got married and he believed me without question.

“It was such a relief. It was all I’d ever wanted from Mum – just the three simple words, ‘I believe you’.”

Debbie and her husband, a builder and farmer, moved to Naples, Italy, shortly after getting married. It was here that they had their first child together, now 10.

After 18 months, the couple moved back to the UK and had two more children, nine, and eight.

But despite being busy raising her own family, Debbie’s painful past would frequently trouble her.

Debbie said: “I still saw Kevin at the odd family do. I didn’t want to but, strangely, part of me felt I had to.

“By this point he was married with kids. It made me feel sick imagining him as this perfect family man.”

It wasn’t until five years later, in 2011, that Kevin’s life came crashing down.

Debbie said: “I had a phone call from Kevin’s wife, one night. She’d heard that I’d accused Kevin of abusing me when I was younger and asked if it was true.

“I put the phone down and something just snapped in me. I wanted him to finally pay for what he did.”

Debbie spoke to her mum and brought up the abuse again. This time, remarkably, she apologised and said she believed her daughter.

“It was all I needed to hear,” Debbie said.

Debbie contacted the police and, after giving a statement, Kevin was arrested in October 2011.

She was thankful for the support from her mum and dad. But not all of the family were so kind.

Debbie said: “Some relatives turned against me when Kevin was arrested. Despite the arrest, they still couldn’t accept what he’d done to me.

“They were on his side and thought I should have kept my mouth shut.

“Within a month of it all kicking off, Stefano and I moved back to Italy.

“Again, I couldn’t be around most of my family. I cut everyone off. I didn’t want any sympathy.”

Kevin pleaded guilty to a charge of lewd, indecent and libidinous practises at Livingston Sheriff Court in February 2013.

He was given a three-year supervision order, during which he can have no unsupervised contact with children under 16, 135 hours community service, and placed on the sex offender’s register for three years.

Debbie’s mum, said: “I’m disgusted with Kevin’s sentence.

“I stupidly believed my mother-in-law when she said she had confronted him [Kevin]. She was convinced that nothing had happened.

“I wish things could have been different and I’m so sorry to Debbie for not believing her.”

Now that the dust has settled, Debbie has moved back to Scotland. But she hasn’t quite finished with the past.

She now hopes to launch a petition to get sex offenders on the register for life.

Debbie said: “After a few years, Kevin will have access to children again. These people aren’t ill, though. There’s no cure for them.

“They need to be monitored for life, not just for a couple of years.

“Kevin stole so many years of my life from those I loved the most. I want to make sure he won’t steal my, or anyone else’s, future.

“I still think about what happened a lot. It’s strange to say, but it’s not what he did that bothers me the most. It’s the consequences. I lost my family and it’s still ongoing.

“Over the years I’ve learnt to live with what happened. If I let the abuse effect me so much I’m not going to be a good mother and wife. Instead, I’d always be the abused child. And that’s not me.”

We were alerted about Narroway after a member of the public contacted UK Database (This website), a website set-up track the movements of criminals who have harmed children or young people.

Narroway, now running Star Wars specialist shop Hunter’s Toys in Teesside, was brought before the Nursing and Midwifery Council in 2010.

He faced allegations about his relationship with a teenage patient at the secure Westwood Centre, at West Lane Hospital, in Middlesbrough.

The Westwood Centre is a low-security mental health unit for young people aged between 12 and 18. Mr Narroway was working there when the teenager, known as patient A, was admitted to the centre in February 2008.

The tribunal heard he told the suicidal teenager to change her T-shirt in front of him, put his hands down her trousers and exposed himself to her.

He told her: “I’ve risked everything for this.”

He also hatched a plan to have sex with her, telling the girl they could go to the shower room and that if anyone came in he could pull up his trousers and say she was just blowing her nose.

The girl, referred to as Patient A, also said Narroway – then 38 – switched shifts to spend time with her

The girl had a history of suicidal behaviour and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder due to physical and emotional distress when she was younger.

Nursing assistant Palkesh Darbar told the hearing: “Patient A said Mr Narroway had touched her private parts and showed her his private parts.”

The NMC panel found him guilty of misconduct and struck him off.

Narroway was convicted of assault in February 2009 for fracturing his then girlfriend’s arm for which he given a suspended prison sentence.

The former councillor for Ingleby Barwick was also cautioned in 2007 for common assault on a woman at his home
