January 2012 – Claire Tiltman murder: Kent Police assess new leads

New information is being assessed by detectives investigating the murder of a Kent schoolgirl 19 years ago.

On January 18, 1993, Claire Tiltman, 16, was stabbed to death in an alleyway just off the A226 London Road, Greenhithe, while on her way to see a friend.

The Dartford Grammar School for Girls pupil was stabbed more than 40 times, in an apparently motiveless attack, four days after her 16th birthday.

Last week, her father made an appeal from his nursing home to find her killer.

Officers said that since then they had received “a number of calls” which they were investigating.

On the anniversary of his daughter’s death last week, Cliff Tiltman, 62, said it would “mean everything” to him to find out who murdered his daughter in 1993.

Killer ‘local’

Over the years police took 1,700 statements, studied over 2,500 messages and examined 1,000 bits of physical evidence.

Seven suspects were questioned about the murder, but none was charged.

They included Robert Napper, the killer of Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common and Samantha Bissett, who was stabbed and mutilated at her home a few miles from where Claire died.

Local milkman Colin Ash-Smith was arrested, but released. He was later jailed for life in 1997 for a crazed knife attack on a young woman and the attempted rape and kidnap of another.

Almost two decades since Claire died, messages are still left to her on an online tribute site.

A spokeswoman for Kent Police said: “Following last week’s appeal, a number of calls were made to the incident room detailing information which is now being fully investigated.”

Det Ch Insp Rob Vinson, from Kent Police, said: “I have always maintained that the killer was a local person and that someone knows who he or she is.”

No-one has ever been charged with the murder.

Claire’s mother Lin died in 2008 and in September last year (2012), her father Cliff died after many years of campaigning to bring his only daughter’s killer to justice, with the case still unsolved.
