Rochdale pervert breached bail conditions and fled to Thailand

Alun-KEW

An aircraft engineer breached the conditions of bail fleeing to Thailand while he was under investigation for downloading indecent images of children at the highest level.

Alun Kew, 40, of Gale Street, Littleborough was arrested in July last year after police executed a warrant at his home address.

He was arrested and released on bail pending further enquiries.

Kew, who worked at Manchester Airport, then went on the run travelling to Burnley and later Thailand.

He was eventually traced to an address in Glasgow.

Kew appeared at Carlisle Crown Court on Thursday August 29 he was jailed for three years after pleading guilty to 27 counts of possession of indecent images of children and two counts of distribution of child images.

He was also ordered to sign the Sex Offender’s Register and made the subject of a Sexual Offender’s Prevention Order to run for 10 years.

PC Gregory Chambers said: “Kew was responsible for downloading and distributing almost 9,000 indecent images, many of them ‘Level 5′, which are regarded as the most serious and distressing in terms of content. Behind each of these images is a real victim.

“Kew then exploited the benefit of the doubt he was given when he was bailed. He felt he could evade capture by going on the run and setting up a new life in Scotland.

“The clear message here is GMP officers will leave no stone unturned in bringing serious offenders to justice.”

Brothers jailed for 1980s sex assaults on 12-year-old

Two brothers have been sentenced for their shared role in indecently assaulting a 12-year-old girl.

One of the brothers went on to rape her on the same day, between October 31, 1980, and November 1, 1981.

That brother, Brian Godwin, 46, was also charged with raping the girl between that date
and 1985 on three more occasions.

He admitted indecent assault and four rape charges. His brother Andrew, 47, admitted the indecent assault charge.

At Reading Crown Court last Friday, Iain Wicks, prosecuting, said the girl had gone to bed and the brothers came into her bedroom.

He said Andrew held her down and covered her mouth to keep her quiet while Brian “undertook an act of sexual intercourse”.

He said Brian Godwin then went on to visit the girl “virtually nightly” to have sex with her over several years.

She kept the crimes a secret until many years later when she confided in her sister.

Brian Godwin was sentenced under section 37 of the Mental Health Act to be detained in Littlemore Mental Health Centre, a medium secure psychiatric unit in Oxford, with a restriction order.

He was already detained in 2002 there for sexual offences involving a 13-year-old girl, the court heard.

Dr Giri Jayawant gave evidence to say that it was her view that Brian Godwin should be detained under the Mental Health Act in hospital.

The judge, Recorder Lawrence West, QC, said the offences he committed had “terrible consequences” on the girl.

Trudi Yeatman, defending Andrew Godwin, said he was between 15 and 16 when the offence occurred.

Andrew Godwin, of Tilehurst Road, West Reading, had a conviction in 2002 for sexual assaults involving a 16-year-old girl.

He was ordered at that time to go on a rehabilitation course for sexual offenders.

Miss Yeatman said Andrew Godwin acknowledged what he had done was “terrible” and “a disgrace”.

She said after the rehabilitation course he had to confront all his family and friends and tell them all about the offences and that he was a sexual offender.

Although Andrew Godwin had suggested in his probation report he did not know what his brother was going to do, Mr Recorder
West said: “I rather think you did know what your brother was going to do.”

He imposed a two year prison sentence suspended for two years with a supervision order

The court heard that he is alleged to use aliases including Sam Boid, Sammy Boid, Ryan Boid, Joey Sidney, Josiah Sidney, Samantha and Angela McDough.

Sidney met his 14-year-old victim on a bus before assaulting her. The offences took place in Swindon during September 2012.

He will be sentenced at Swindon Crown Court on September 27.

Detective Constable Gemma Vinton, who investigated the case, said: “The victim showed great courage in giving evidence in court, which has no doubt contributed to the successful outcome in this case.”

Anyone who has been a victim of sexual abuse or suspects that children are being abused should contact Wiltshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where information can be left anonymously if they wish.

Nerd with Star Trek flat admits net filth

Anthony Alleyne

Pervert Anthony Alleyne pictured above and below

A STAR Trek fanatic who turned his flat into the Starship Enterprise is facing jail over child sex abuse pictures.

Divorced nerd Anthony Alleyne, 60, claimed Star Trek was his “only vice” after he spent thousands transforming his studio flat.

Anthony Alleyne2

But the warped Trekkie was arrested after spending hours alone in his sci-fi creation trawling through the images.

Alleyne was released on bail by Leicester Crown Court yesterday after his sentencing was adjourned until next Friday.

He had previously pleaded guilty to ten counts each of making and distributing indecent images of children, and two counts of possessing extreme pornographic images involving an animal.

Alleyne, from Hinckley, Leics, initially decked out his pad as the USS Enterprise from the 1979 Star Trek film.

But he found it “boring” and decided to upgrade to the Starship Voyager in the 1990s series, including a copy of the “beam me up” transporter.

Even the doorbell was customised to play the voice of actor Patrick Stewart in his role as Capt Picard.

Alleyne’s shrine was threatened with destruction when ex-wife Georgina, 52, wanted to sell the flat last year.

He said: “I’m gutted — it’s my life’s work and it looks like it’s going into a skip. Some people might think I’m a sad individual, but I’m not. I’m just really into Star Trek — it’s my only vice.”

Sex beast jailed for ‘unspeakable evil’

fred

“Unspeakable evil”. Those were the words used by a judge to describe a paedophile who raped a four-year-old girl and sexually abused a nine-year-old boy.

Frederick Roskall, 56, who has now been locked up for 16 years, always denied abusing the children and forced the pair, who are now adults, to go through the ordeal of a trial, reliving the harrowing events of their childhoods.

The jury found the former bus driver guilty of two counts of rape and five counts of indecent assault in what Judge Christopher Cornwall described as “terrible and grotesque offences.”

Roskall – who used numerous names, including Bill, to evade the authorities – only stopped abusing the children in Preston when he was convicted of sexually assaulting another girl in the late 1990s and sentenced to four years in prison.

Two years ago the young woman came forward to report Roskall, of Oban Drive, Blackburn, had also abused and raped her after nightmares and stress following the birth of her daughter left her terrified she would run into him with her child.

On Friday Judge Cornwall, sentencing, said: “The indecent touching was bad enough but to rape a child under six is just unspeakable evil.

“To then threaten that child with being buried in a cemetery if she disclosed what you had done to her is the behaviour of someone who is without humanity and without any sense of morality.”

Speaking after the sentence, the woman – who can not be identified for legal reasons – said she was relieved her attacker is now behind bars but says her entire life has been affected by Roskall.

She said: “I couldn’t even go to school because I couldn’t catch a bus, because he drove a bus.

“It messed up all my education.

“I didn’t know what he looked like so I was scared of every man that came near.

“He changed his appearance so many times I had all these different faces in my head. You are constantly looking and thinking ‘is that him?’

“I have such an irrational thing not wanting to let any man near my daughter.

“Being in big groups, being around men, male teachers, male students, I just couldn’t handle it.

“I can’t get in a taxi without a member of my family with me.”

The victims waited almost two and a half years for Roskall to stand trial and had to go through the ordeal of having their evidence called into question in court.

The woman said: “It was horrible. Half of the questions were really violating.

“To ask you to remember things from 15 years ago and to be called a liar.

“He just doesn’t show any remorse. Going through the trial he just sat with his hands behind his head. But as I was giving evidence he was leaning forward past the screens. It is that feeling, you know someone is watching you.”

Sex beast Paul Kent is a ‘dangerous manipulator’

paul

PROSECUTORS say a Basingstoke man convicted of multiple rapes is a dangerous manipulator.

Paul Kent, of Maybrook in Chineham was last week found guilty of 20 crimes against women.

A jury of seven women and five men spent nearly 37 hours considering their verdicts following a seven week trial at Winchester Crown Court.

They found Kent, a mechanic, guilty of nine counts of rape against four different women.

He was also found guilty of five counts of sexual activity with a child – offences committed against two girls aged 14 and 15.

And he was convicted of blackmail, causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intimidation, and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

Kent did not react when the jury foreman read out the last of the verdicts last Thursday.

Addressing Kent, who had been laughing and joking with security staff, Judge Guy Boney said: “You have been convicted of a large number of very serious offences and I have to tell you that a substantial prison sentence is unavoidable.”

Following the verdicts, Wessex Crown Prosecution Service crown advocate Ellie Fargin, who bought the case against Kent, said he was devious and would often threaten his victims with violence.

She said: “Paul Kent is a dangerous sexual predator who has been manipulating, controlling, and raping adult women as well as grooming and abusing young girls.

“In addition to the abuses he inflicted on these women he made threats of intimidation against one of them whom he had abused when she was a child and he assaulted another woman.

“He was also found guilty of blackmailing a further woman of £10,000 and threatened to get it from her family if she failed to pay.

“We would like to thank all the victims in this case who had the tremendous courage to come forward and give evidence in court. We hope that with this prosecution they will now be able to move forward with their lives.”

Detective Constable Louise Trigg, who investigated the case, said: “This was a harrowing and difficult trial. Mr Kent is a very dangerous man whose behaviour towards women and young girls was depraved, sadistic and degrading.”

She said the women who were his victims had shown great courage in coming forward and his conviction sent a strong message that Hampshire Constabulary was committed to investigating all reports of abuse and sexual offences.

Nuneaton child abuser facing long jail term

A man is facing a long prison sentence after a jury convicted him of sexually abusing a young boy in a park and behind a supermarket.

Paul Newell had pleaded not guilty at the crown court in Leamington to a total of nine sexual offences against the eight-year-old boy, including one of raping him

Newell, aged 27, of Bracebridge Street, Nuneaton, also denied further charges against two girls.

He claimed that all the allegations had been made up – but at the end of a six-day trial, the jury took less than three hours to find him guilty of all 15 charges.

At the request of his barrister John Brotherton, the case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report to be prepared on Newell.

Prosecutor David Bright had told the jury: “This is a case in which the defendant stands accused of having committed a number of sexual offences some years ago.”

His offences against the boy took place in various locations, including a Nuneaton park, when Newell was in his late teens.

There were six offences of indecent assault and two of sexual assault on the boy, including touching him while they were in the park

Newell also took the boy, who was aged about eight at the time, down an alleyway at the back of the Sainsburys store in Nuneaton, pulled his trousers down and touched him.

As well as the offences against the boy, Newell had indecently touched an eight-year-old girl and incited her to perform a sex act on him. He faced two further charges of sexually assaulting another girl, who was aged under 13 at the time, by touching her and one of attempting to rape her.

During the trial the jury heard each of the victims give their evidence by their recorded police interviews being played in court before they were questioned via a television link from a room elsewhere.

Adjourning the case for the pre-sentence report to be prepared on Newell, Recorder Christopher Hotten QC granted him conditional bail.

But Recorder Hotten, who ordered Newell to register as a sex offender, warned him that was not to be taken as an indication of what would happen to him and that he was facing a significant custodial sentence.

Stafford man caught downloading child abuse images escapes with community order

A STAFFORD man caught downloading indecent images and movies of children escaped with a community order from a judge.

Police raided Michael Wright’s home after getting information from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children.

Simon Rippon, prosecuting, said only the defendant’s girlfriend was home at the time as police seized computer equipment.

Wright rang the police later the same day and confessed that illicit images on the computer were his. He was later arrested and made full admissions.

On the computer were a total of 38 pictures, most of them the least serious level one, showing boys and girls aged between five and 15 in sexual situations.

There were also a total of 47 pornographic movies, including nine at level four and one at the most serious level five showing two teenage girls, one of them tied up.

The police investigation also revealed that two of the movies, at level two, had been passed on by Wright via a Skype network. They showed girls aged between five and 15 engaging in sexual activity.

Wright, aged 32, of Co-Operative Street, Stafford admitted possessing pornographic images and movies of children between September 2011 and December last year, plus two charges of distributing indecent movies.

He was given a three year community order and ordered to register as a sex offender for the next five years.

Joanne Clark, defending, said Wright had been open and honest with the police.

Although he lost his job when these offences came to light, he had found another job in Coventry and his new employers, his girlfriend and his family were standing by him.

The two movies sent over a file-sharing network were for no financial gain.

A BARCLAYS bank advert praising Premier League fans stars a PAEDOPHILE, The Sun can reveal today

Bedwell

Darren Bedwell features in the one-and-a-half minute commercial entitled You Are Football — despite convictions for possessing child abuse images.

The pervert plumber, 45, is seen sitting open-mouthed in a crowd of cheering fans next to a boy.

He was even paid for the work as an extra after somehow slipping through checks by ad agency BBH.

The film first aired on BT Sport, Sky, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 on August 16, the night before the start of the 2013 season. An online version on the bank’s barclaysfootballtv YouTube account has already been viewed nearly 130,000 times.

Now the High Street giant has been forced to pull the film after we exposed the appalling error.

Sicko Bedwell was added to the Sex Offenders’ Register after pleading guilty to possessing indecent images of children in 2007.

He was given a three-year community order and psychological treatment in 2010 after admitting ten charges of making more sick pictures. But the divorced dad-of-three was allowed to star in the video, which follows dedicated fans from Manchester City, West Ham and Everton on their travels to games.

It is part of a campaign by the Premier League sponsor to thank supporters for “unwavering devotion through triumph and tragedy”.

Bedwell appears one minute into the ad in a West Ham shirt.

He tried to deny his crimes when confronted outside his home in Bexleyheath, South London. But court records linked him directly to them.

Renowned ad firm BBH — which created Audi’s “Vorsprung durch Technik” slogan and represents firms including British Airways and Google — confirmed Bedwell was paid a “nominal” fee after he came forward to take part in the ad.

It contacted fans through online forums and supporters’ clubs. BBH added: “Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

“Darren Bedwell was one of 400 genuine football fans who appeared in the film as extras. We have taken the advert off air and are creating a new version of the commercial which he will not be in.”

Barclays said: “We’re very grateful to The Sun for bringing this serious issue to our attention.

“We have asked the advertising agency to explain to us what went wrong in their vetting process to allow this to happen. And we have also ordered that the advert be immediately recut to remove the individual from the footage before it is broadcast again.”

A Premier League spokesman added: “The Sun is right to bring this situation to light.”

Bognor paedophile who hid images jailed

A Bognor Regis man was sentenced over offences relating to indecent images of children.

Mark Gary Matthews, 32, currently of Queensway, Bognor, but formerly of Laurel Grove, Bognor, appeared at Chichester Crown Court on Friday (August 30) and was sentenced to a total of eight months imprisonment.

He was also served with a sexual offence prevention order (SOPO) to last indefinitely, severely restricting his access to computers and to children, will be required to register as a sex offender for ten years and was banned from any work with children.

He pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to making two indecent images of children and with failing to disclose his computer password. He was on bail until his sentencing on Friday.

The prosecution followed an intelligence-led investigation by the Paedophile On-Line Investigation Team (POLIT) of Sussex Police.

Detective Constable Chris Smith of POLIT said: “As we arrived at Matthews’ address in Laurel Grove to arrest him in December, 2010, he managed to run upstairs and pull the lead from his laptop, which was found to be fully encrypted.

“The indecent images he was charged with making were found on a micro SD card in his bedroom. Despite many opportunities he has refused to disclose the password, which is an offence in itself, and research is still continuing to break the encryption.

“As and when we are able to access his computer, and if we then find any indecent material on it, we will consult the Crown Prosecution Service about further charges.

“Failing to disclose a computer password is a very rare offence, and this is the first conviction of its type in Sussex.

“Anyone who has information about any alleged offending involving children, either current or historic, can always contact us, in confidence, via 101 or emailcontact.centre@sussex.pnn.police.uk. You can also contact independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously via 0800 555 111.”

Bromley police officer pleads guilty to having sexual relationship with 13-year-old girl

A serving police officer, from Bromley, has admitted to having a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old girl.

Andrew Gouge, 34, pleaded guilty to meeting a child following grooming and sexual activity with a child at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday.

He was arrested on April 24 after witnesses saw him kissing and fondling a young girl in Orpington.

Gouge first met his victim, then aged 13, on an internet chatroom. After exchanging Blackberry Messenger details, they met up a number of times, usually in parks, where they would kiss.

Det Ch Insp Pete Thomas said: “Andrew Gouge has shown himself to be someone who has targeted, groomed and exploited a vulnerable young child for his own sexual needs.

“His conduct has caused significant harm and the investigation highlights the need to remain vigilant to the risks posed by social media and the internet in order to safeguard children.”

Gouge is set to be sentenced on Monday, September 30 and will also now be subject to a full misconduct hearing.

Paedophile who abused a girl for 11 years is jailed

Michael Andrews

A VILE pervert who subjected a child to more than a decade of abuse has been locked up for 18 years.

Michael Andrews was given the sentence for 12 counts of abuse relating to various sexual offences which began when his victim was just eight years old.

During his sentencing hearing at Portsmouth Crown Court, it was revealed that the 58-year-old’s victim, now an adult, only felt able to report Andrews to the authorities after she confided in her partner.

A jury found him guilty of all counts by 10 votes to two at the end of a week-long trial.

Judge Sarah Munro QC described how Andrews, of Prince Albert Road in Southsea, began ‘grooming’ his victim at eight years old.

She said: ‘When she was 11 you raped her for the first time.

‘She felt it was wrong and that she was dirty. But such activity became normal.

‘She tried to live a normal life and block out what you were doing with her.

‘She felt she was in a relationship or having an affair with you. At the same time she felt intimidated by you.’

Although his victim knew it was wrong, Andrews convinced her ‘that what was happening was her fault.’

When she finally plucked up the courage to report Andrews, he denied everything, forcing her to give evidence in a trial.

Mrs Munro added: ‘You denied these offences and she had to relive these offences in court all over again.

‘I can only hope that she can take some comfort that your abuse has now come to light and you are to be punished for robbing her of her childhood and scarring her for life.’

‘It was a campaign of abuse, culminating in regular rapes over many years of a young girl.’

Referring to a statement made by the victim about the impact of the abuse, which was not read out in court, Mrs Munro said: ‘The psychological effect on her has been extreme,’

As a result, his victim has suffered from low confidence and low self-esteem, and described herself as being ‘damaged goods.’

The judge added: ‘She says she hated her childhood and she says she now hopes she can fix herself.’

Andrews has been put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for the rest of his life and is barred from ever working with children.

Man jailed over baby abuse images

craigking

A man who photographed himself sexually abusing a baby girl has been jailed for two years.

The images made by Craig King, 31, of Swinton, Salford, were found on a computer belonging to a man arrested as part of a nationwide abuse operation.

King admitted sexually assaulting a child under 13, two charges of making an indecent image of a child and two charges of distributing images.

Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard the girl was about 18 months old.

The images were discovered in Salford in January 2007 when an arrested man’s computers were examined. The man is not linked to King.

Police identified King as the abuser and he later admitted that he had abused the baby and took three pictures on his mobile phone.

He then sent the pictures on when he was chatting on the internet to others about sex and child abuse, police said.

Det Con Andrew Pilling, of Greater Manchester Police’s Abusive Images Investigation Unit, said: “What King did to this young child is absolutely appalling.

“This was a sickening example of what some people will do for their own sexual gratification.”

King, of Avondale, Swinton, was jailed for two years and four months and had his licence period extended by a year and eight months. He was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years.

Five years in jail for Watford man Bader Loy who took pictures of himself abusing boy

A Watford man who took pictures of a young boy as he sexually abused him and then distributed them over the internet has been jailed for five years and three months.

Bader Loy abused the youngster over a two year period.

He also took another young teenage boy to his home and sexually touched him after meeting the boy through a website called Gaydar.

At St Albans Crown Court Loy, 67, of Woodhurst Avenue, Watford, appeared for sentence on a total of 17 child sex abuse charges.

Anne Evans prosecuting said it was on June 23 last year that police went to the defendant’s home.

He was arrested for possessing indecent images of children, which police believed he had sent to others via the internet.

He had amassed a collection of more than 2,000 images, some of which were at the very worst level.

Some of the pictures police found showed a young boy being abused by Loy himself.

Detectives were able to trace the teenager, who the court heard is still in a state of denial about what happened even though the photos provide conclusive proof.

The court heard that one man Loy distributed the photos to was an 80-year-old and living in Canada.

The man, a former teacher from England who had emigrated, had subsequently been jailed.

Judge Andrew Bright QC hearing the case was told that Loy had met a young boy through a website called Gaydar.

Miss Evans said the boy made contact with Loy and the pair met in a car park in Watford.

The court was told Loy put the youngster’s push bike in the boot of his car and then drove the boy to his home where, in a bedroom, they undressed and touched each other.

The prosecutor said Loy had sent an account of the incident to other internet users.

In court Loy pleaded guilty to five offences of sexual activity with a child, three offences of taking indecent photos, two of distributing indecent pictures, five of making indecent photos of a child and two of possessing indecent photos.

Passing sentence Judge Bright told Loy he had systematically abused one young boy who he had photographed.

He said he had taken advantage of the second youth “for his own gratification”.

He was jailed for five years and three months.

Loy’s name will also go on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life and he was also made the subject of a sexual offences prevention order.

Sex beast carved his name into girls’ arms

Dildhar Miah

AN Oldham man who carved his nickname on the arms of two young girls and sexually assaulted a third has been jailed.

Dildhar Miah (21), of Yasmin Gardens, West Hulme, was sentenced to six years imprisonment at Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, yesterday after admitting assaulting the two 14-year-olds and sexual activity with a child.

The assaults took place near Boundary Park in August last year when Miah carved part of his nickname into the arms of the two girls with a piece of glass.

He was also charged with an offence of child abduction after a 14-year-old girl was found at his home address in November that year.

He had previously been issued with a child-abduction notice stating that he was not allowed to communicate with her or allow her to stay at his home.

Following further disclosures by the third victim some weeks later, Miah was charged with three offences of committing sexual activity with a child between August and November, 2012, as well as child abduction with intent to commit a sexual offence. He pleaded guilty to all the charges.

Charlotte Rimmer, District Crown Prosecutor for CPS North-West said: “Dildhar Miah targeted his young, vulnerable victims and sought to use his influence as an older male to exploit them.

“Carving his nickname into the arms of two of the girls while they were intoxicated was just one way in which he tried to exercise his control over them.”

Four-year jail sentence for sex assault on child

A PERVERT has been jailed for more than four years after he sexually assaulted an underage girl.

The precise details of David Lawrence’s attack on the girl, who was under the age of 13, were not revealed during his sentencing at Derby Crown Court.

But the court was told that he was already a serving prisoner for a similar offence when the allegations were made.

He had previously been sent to jail for 21 months.

Lawrence, 43, of Bass Street, Derby, was interviewed in prison about the allegation last month but he denied the incident had taken place.

Initially he was also charged with raping the child but this was dropped when the trial took place, said Mark Watson, for Lawrence.

Jailing Lawrence for four years and three months, Judge John Burgess said: “This is a most unusual case because of its history.

“You were already a serving prisoner when these fresh allegations came to light, meaning that the police had to visit you in prison to put the allegations to you before you were charged.

“The timing of all this is most unusual. It makes it a difficult sentencing exercise

“But this is a very serious offence and one that you were convicted of by a jury.”

The court was told that Lawrence was already the subject of a sexual offenders’ prevention order for 10 years.

Judge Burgess increased that indefinitely.

Mr Watson, for Lawrence, said his client had been behaving in “an exemplary way” since he was first put behind bars for the 21-month sentence.

PRIEST JAILED FOR `DEGRADING’ ATTACK ON BOY

967531_4662718105699_1956238935_n

A Roman Catholic priest was today jailed for three years for his “evil and degrading” sex attack on a 15-year-old boy who had turned to him for help and guidance.

Michael Hobbs, 53, who was ordained into the Roman Catholic church 13 years ago, carried out his indecent assault in his own home while working as a parish
priest in Gadebridge, Hemel Hempstead, Herts.

A jury convicted him of a single charge of indecent assault following a four-day trial at St Albans Crown Court earlier this year.

The jury was told that Hobbs, originally from Dublin, led his victim into his bedroom before performing a sex act on the naked youngster.

The assault, on February 13 this year, had left the boy feeling “sick, dirty and crying,” the jury had been told.

Sentencing him today at St Albans Crown Court, Herts, Judge Findlay Baker QC, said: “When one night a 15-year-old boy sought advice and comfort from you in your own home you used the occasion to attempt to induce him into your bed and then committed a serious sexual assault upon him. It was a gross breach of trust, not just an act of criminal self indulgence and it was for the boy an act of defilement and deeply scarring.”

Hobbs, of previous good character, admitted during the trial to being “homosexual in nature, but not in practice” as his vow of celibacy strictly prohibited him engaging in any sexual activity.

He did, however, admit to visiting gay bars in Thailand only last year in search of male sexual company.

He vigorously denied the allegation against him saying the boy had concocted the story to divert his parents’ anger away from him after they had discovered he had stolen a family ring and given it to his girlfriend for a St Valentine’s
Day present.

Hobbs said he had hugged and kissed the boy to give him reassurance but said nothing of a sexual nature had occurred between them that night.

In mitigation Elizabeth Goodchilde, defending, said: “He is not a predatory male. This is not someone who is likely to re-offend. He has voluntarily registered himself on the Sex Offenders’ Register and he is someone who has sought help. He is a man who has a background of huge dedication for the community.”

Character witness Monsignor Tom Egan, who works at Archbishop House in Westminster, London, told the court: “He was renowned as a good school chaplain. He has worked in many, many schools and there has never been a hint or allegation of inappropriate behaviour with young children.”

Hobbs was also ordered to be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.

DC Matt Barnes, who works for Hertfordshire Police Force’s child protection and investigation unit said following the sentence: “This was a serious case of
abuse of trust by someone in a position of authority and responsibility. The defendant was a respected parish priest who had been appointed to involve himself with the life of three schools.

“In this case the victim approached this individual for pastoral care and guidance but was abused and exploited.”

DC Barnes urged any victims of sexual abuse to come forward and report the crime to police.
